Telekom Research & Development Sdn Bhd (TM R&D), the innovation arm of TM Group and a subsidiary of MMU, bagged the Digital Transformation of the Year Award (Private Sector/NGO) at the WITSA Global Innovation and Tech Excellence Awards 2024 for its innovative solution namely Mobile Intelligent Network Diagnostic System (MINDS). Held in Yerevan, Armenia, this prestigious accolade was awarded in recognition of the company’s success in developing an innovative solution that is able to seamlessly integrate disparate systems employing legacy technology.



MINDS is a homegrown solution that helps mobile service providers manage customer complaints more efficiently by correlating all the information about a customer’s network usage and experience into a single, centralised platform. Telekom Research & Development Sdn Bhd (TM R&D), the innovation arm of Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) wins the “Digital-Utilities” Award for its smart workforce management solution known as FORCE at the recent Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards 2023 (MTEA), organised by the Asian Business Review.



This is the seventh award received by TM R&D from MTEA in the last five years, spotlighting its role in accelerating the use of advanced technology and mobile-first approach to spearhead industrial productivity and operational efficiencies as Malaysia transitions into a digital economy. 	In-house smart solutions for Fixed Wireless Access connectivity and customer experience platform for frontliners awarded under “Connectivity-Telecommunications” and “AI-IT Services” categories respectively
 Telekom Research & Development Sdn Bhd (TM R&D), the innovation arm of Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), recently bagged two awards at the Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards 2022, organised by the Singapore Business Review.
The Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards spotlights exceptional companies who are technology disruptors that boosts Malaysia’s economy. TM’s Fast Internet for All (FIRA) solution was bestowed the award under the “Connectivity-Telecommunications” category, while TM’s Single Platform on Intelligent Customer Experience (SPICE.ai) won the award in the “Artificial Intelligence (AI)-IT Services” category.
Commenting on these awards, Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, Chief Executive Officer, TM R&D said, “I couldn’t be prouder of my team as these awards reflect their commitment to meet the fastevolving digital needs of today’s customers and strengthen our position as a research leader in these fields. FIRA was introduced as a way to support the government in providing Malaysians with quality access to digital connectivity nationwide. Aimed at offering better internet service to underserved communities, FIRA uses Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) technologies to improve connectivity in rural areas across Malaysia. Since its first deployment in Malacca back in July 2020, the solution has demonstrated promising success in improving download and upload link speeds compared to other broadband services. The solution has since been implemented at a rural school in Selangor and at Pusat Komuniti Desa sites under the Ministry of Rural Development. It has also supported an IR4.0 use case in Terengganu.
“FIRA is formulated to address two common issues: coverage and speed. The solution is capable to deliver connectivity up to 50Mbps within 5-8km range, compared to a traditional 4G cell within 1km range. Furthermore, with its quick deployment procedures, FIRA can help mitigate customers’ connectivity concerns in a cost-effective and timely manner,” shared Dr. Sharlene.
SPICE.ai, on the other hand, aims to assist frontliners in their daily task of addressing customer service enquiries and requests.
Dr Sharlene explained, “SPICE.ai consists of multiple components that cover different parts of an existing customer experience system. By integrating these components, frontliners gain a more holistic view of each customers’ profiles. The solution then implements real-time analytics to improve customer experience, giving frontliners the right information at the right time which allows them to deliver a better experience to customers.”
This analytics system has been deployed nationwide for nearly two years and becomes the primary touchpoint for more than 5,000 TM frontliners in most customer interactions across multiple channels. The performance of SPICE.ai has proven to be reliable and seamless even when integrated with more than 20 existing, standalone systems and was still able to relay the processed information through one single platform, on top of providing analytics and advisory.

Telekom Research & Development Sdn Bhd (TM R&D), the innovation arm of Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) recently bagged the Most Innovative Digital Infrastructure Services Provider in Malaysia for its solution called CAMELIA at the UK-based Global Business Outlook Awards 2021.



The award was conferred to TM R&D in recognition of its achievement for developing CAMELIA, which is set to become one of the digital transformation enablers for network operators to handle end-to-end processes for service assurance in TM.



Commenting on the achievement, Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, Chief Executive Officer, TM R&D said, “This is indeed a proud moment for us. CAMELIA is an intelligent analytical platform that can provide the network’s health condition, fault diagnostics and localisation, and can predict potential service as well as line failure up to 30 days in advance.



In addition, CAMELIA provides early warning alerts that shall help to transform processors from a reactive based troubleshooting process to a proactive one with the goal of improved quality of service and faster incident resolution. As an enabler, CAMELIA integrates with other operating systems to monitor all subscriber lines 24 hours and provide early detection. Early filtration can isolate the problem whether it is at the physical network element layer or a service layer.



Global Business Outlook Awards recognises and rewards excellence in businesses around the world. TM R&D wins Global Business Outlook Awards 2021 for its innovation, CAMELIA

Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) through its innovation arm, TM Research & Development (TM R&D) wins the AI – Telecommunications Award at the recent Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards 2021, presented by Singapore Business Review.



The award was conferred in recognition of the Company’s achievement in developing PATROL as a proof of function for research particularly on automatic detection of construction using vehicle dashcam and generate proactive alerts using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning algorithms.



This is the fourth award received by TM R&D from the Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards in its three years of running. The awards ceremony lauds exceptional companies that have successfully pioneered IT products, solutions and innovative technology projects in their respective industries to boost Malaysia’s fast-growing economy.

Project PATROL was developed to provide early warning alerts on areas where TM infrastructure has a high risk of being destroyed due to civil and construction works by a third party. Ideally, before the civil or construction works were to begin, TM and other utility companies are to be consulted to ensure proper precautionary measures are taken to avoid telecommunication cable or other utility infrastructure cuts such as water or sewerage.



The cable cuts will lead to loss of broadband and other telecommunication services which will cause major inconveniences to consumer lifestyle and businesses, as well as operation nightmare for any telcos. To fill in those gaps, PATROL was developed powered by digital and AI capabilities.



PATROL leverages AI, object detection capabilities and the Internet of Things (IoT) to detect a construction area using a dashcam. The system then automatically checks if the unregistered civil and construction activity is in close proximity to underground or overhead cable infrastructure. Several parameters are used to assess risk before an alert is sent to the Network Operations Centre for investigation.



“PATROL provides real-time alerts on civil and construction activities that pose a high risk to the security and safety of TM’s cable infrastructure. This information allows telco providers to act fast in preventing possible threats to their assets. With PATROL, we foresee a huge opportunity for operational cost avoidance due to cable cut cases,” she further added.

TM R&D was recently conferred the Merit Award under the ICT Services Solutions sub category for its Cloud Native Data Exchange Platform Utilising Network APIs (Data Exchange Platform) at the MSC Malaysia Asia Pacific ICT Awards (MSC Malaysia APICTA) 2020 organised virtually by the National ICT Association of Malaysia (PIKOM) and supported by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC).



Data Exchange Platform, built on TM R&D’s Open Innovation Platform (OIP) is a one-stop centre for managing data and a full cloud-native platform. This data exchange centre allows industries to better understand consumer behavioral changes and movement patterns as well as impact on businesses. TM R&D Conferred Merit at the 21st MSC Malaysia Asia Pacific ICT Awards (MSC Malaysia APICTA) 2020

Telekom Research & Development Sdn Bhd (TM R&D), the innovation arm of Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), recently bagged the Sustainable Growth Award at the prestigious WITSA Global ICT Excellence Awards 2020 for its innovative solution namely Smart Water Integrated Management System (SWIMS).  This was in recognition of the company’s success in using Information and Communications Technology (ICT) as a tool to promote sustainable economic growth.



World Information Technology and Services Alliance (WITSA) is a leading consortium of ICT industry association members from over 80 countries/economies around the world. The WITSA Global ICT Excellence Awards 2020 were presented to selected users and providers whose use and applications of ICT exhibit exceptional achievement within the nominated categories.

TM R&D Wins Sustainable Growth Accolade for its Innovative Solution at the WITSA Global ICT Excellence Awards 2020

We are happy to share that our CEO, Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah was awarded with the Malaysia’s Woman Leaders 2020 Accolade! This award celebrates leaders and achievers in organisations that believe in producing leaders of change in Malaysia.

The Smart Water Integrated Management System (SWIMS) won the IoT Innovation Award category while the Enterprise Energy Management System (EENT) received recognition under the Data Innovation Award category.



Telekom Research & Development Sdn Bhd (TM R&D), the innovation arm of Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), recently bagged two (2) awards at the prestigious World Communication Awards 2020 organised virtually in London, United Kingdom.



The awards, the fourth and fifth received by TM R&D this year, were conferred to TM R&D for its innovative solutions namely Smart Water Integrated Management System (SWIMS) under the IoT Innovation Award category while Enterprise Energy Management System (EENT) received the recognition under the Data Innovation Award category.

Telekom Research & Development Sdn Bhd (TM R&D), the innovation arm of Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), added another feather to its cap when they recently bagged not one, but two (2) awards at the prestigious TM Forum Excellence Awards 2020.



The awards were conferred to TM R&D for its innovative solutions namely Smart Water Integrated Management System (SWIMS) under the Beyond Connectivity category, while its Intelligent Network Diagnostic & Expert Advisory System for Service Desk (IDEAS+) solution received the recognition under the A.I, Data & Analytics category.



Since 2007, TM Forum Excellence Awards recognises the world’s leading companies for their innovative achievements spanning digital transformation, business and IT agility, customer centricity, cultural transformation, cross-industry partnering and collaboration, and product and service innovation in AI, data analytics, autonomous networks and cloud native IT. All entries were assessed by a global panel of judges based on the extensive materials submitted. Each year, the judging panels are carefully selected from varied global organisations to ensure a balanced approach and a wholly impartial view.

These include electric utilities, transportation, smart cities and factory automation, to enable in-depth, new insights into the operations and the right tools to act on those insights.



“SWIMS offers end-to-end smart water management that improves non-revenue water management. It optimises the repair and replacement of ageing water infrastructure as well as improves response to weather events such as water level and quality. Based on feedback we received from Air Selangor, with SWIMS, water usage visibility improved by 3,000% and meter reading accuracy improved 10-15% through automation,” shared Dr. Sharlene.



The TM Forum Excellence Awards also recognises another solution from TM R&D, IDEAS+ which is a one-stop advisory platform deployed at TM’s contact centre. Using machine-learning algorithm, IDEAS+ assists the call centre agents to efficiently troubleshoot and resolve various customer issues. The objectives of the project were to reduce Average Handling Time (AHT) at the contact centre when entertaining customer calls, reduce repeated truck roll, increase the accuracy of troubleshooting and escalation as well as to achieve cost-saving. IDEAS+ is an intelligent diagnostic and advisory system for TM contact centre agents to provide predictive guideline as well as troubleshooting steps with more than 95% accuracy.

TM RND Won Two Awards at the Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards 2019!

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 15 – TM Research & Development (TM R&D), the research arm and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM), won the Cross Category: Research & Development for its innovative Smart Safety Helmet at the 19th MSC Malaysia Asia Pacific ICT Awards (MSC Malaysia APICTA), recently.



Winning the award,  organised by the National ICT Association of Malaysia (PIKOM), has led TM R&D to be selected to represent Malaysia in the Cross Category: Research & Development at the International APICTA Awards 2018 in Guangzhou, China. 



Chief executive  officer of TM R&D, Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah was present to accept the award.



Acting group chief executive officer of TM, Datuk Bazlan Osman, in statement, said, “We are excited and thrilled to know that TM R&D has won the award. It was such a great honour and it is the first of many other innovations that will be introduced by our R&D arm. We are certainly proud of this recognition and TM R&D’s outstanding achievement in the ICT industry.”

TM R&D Wins Award for Smart Safety Helmet

10 December 2017: TM Research & Development (TM R&D) was recently conferred Merit for its LTE-WiFi Aggregation (LTE Plus) under the Communication Category during the Asia Pacific ICT Alliance Awards 2017 (APICTA Awards) held at Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC) in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
LTE Plus is a 3GPP advanced feature that enables operators to integrate WiFi (operating in unlicensed band) and cellular traffics, hence improving transmission bandwidth and enhancing user experience. LTE Plus was developed to assist UniFi mobile to increase its 4G transmission bandwidth by aggregating WiFi unlicensed band and cellular band based on the  3GPP advanced feature.
Dubbed as the Oscar of the ICT Arena, the APICTA Awards is an international awards program organized by APICTA, which aims to increase ICT awareness in the community and assist in bridging the digital divide. By providing networking and product benchmarking opportunities to ICT innovators and entrepreneurs in the region, the program is designed to stimulate ICT innovation and creativity, promote economic and trade relations, facilitate technology transfer, and offer business matching opportunities via exposure to venture capitalists and investors.

TM R&D Received Merit at the Asia Pacific ICT Alliance Awards 2017 in Dhaka

28 November 2017: TM Research & Development (TM R&D) recently won the Best Connectivity Solution category for its Integrated Smart Services Framework (iSSEF Prime) at the World Communication Awards 2017 held at the Supernova, Victoria Embankment Gardens, London.
iSSEF Prime is the enhanced version of TM R&D’s iSSEF smart services platform, which underpins many Internet of Things (IoT) services and applications. It is designed to be a flexible framework and as a template PaaS that can be utilised for developing future projects in the area of digital services.
It is an “easy to use portal of information for many IoT offerings,” one of the judges said. This is “definitely a solution bringing value to operators in their ambition to develop digital services,” added another, while a third noted that the platform “addresses a critical challenge for the success of IoT.”
The judging panel highlighted the example use cases given by TM R&D in its entry, including smart buildings, parking applications, smart traffic lights and street lighting. “These can only be scratching the surface of its potential,” the judges said.
Launched in 1999, the World Communication Awards (WCA) has shown to be the undisputed blue chip mark of success in the global telecom industry. Recognised as the most prestigious awards ceremony in the industry, the WCA is synonymous with innovation, merit and outstanding performance in the telecoms field. The awards are awarded to those who have shown the highest level of quality and innovation throughout the year.

TM R&D Wins World Communication Awards 2017 in London

13 October 2017: TM Research & Development (TM R&D) was recently conferred Merit during the 18th MSC Malaysia Asia Pacific ICT (MSC Malaysia APICTA) Awards 2017 organised by the National ICT Association of Malaysia (PIKOM) held at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. 



TM R&D received 3 merits this year, one for the Best of Communications Applications and two under the Best of Research & Development category. All 3 projects will represent Malaysia at the International APICTA which will be held in Dhaka in December 2017. The 3 projects are LTE-WiFi Aggregation (LTE Plus), Vital Wireless Dongle (V-WiD) and Integrated Smart Services Framework (iSSEF).



LTE-WiFi Aggregation (LTE Plus) was developed to assist UniFi Mobile to increase its 4G transmission bandwidth by aggregating WiFi unlicensed band and cellular band based on 3GPP advanced feature. Vital Wireless Dongle (V-WiD) was built for MMMO to boost broadband speed using WiFi-4G LTE bonding solution. It can also function as a portable Access Point (AP) which offers continuous and seamless wireless connectivity anywhere anytime. Integrated Smart Services Exchange Framework (iSSEF) is an IoT framework that allows fast integration of smart services which enable smart living experience to the end users.
