TM R&D Secures Double Wins at Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards 2026
Recognised for advancing AI-driven network assurance and automation in telecommunications
CYBERJAYA, 7 April 2026 – Telekom Research & Development Sdn Bhd (TM R&D), the innovation arm of TM Group and a subsidiary of Multimedia University (MMU), has won the Network and Broadband – Telecommunications and Automation – Telecommunications categories at the Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards 2026. The recognition celebrates the development of two platforms, ANTRIX and SMART-E which enhance network assurance and automate large-scale infrastructure migrations across Telekom Malaysia Berhad’s (TM) nationwide network.
Developed by TM R&D in collaboration with Group Network Technology of TM, both platforms address long-standing operational challenges in network assurance and infrastructure upgrades while improving efficiency, visibility and service continuity across TM’s broadband ecosystem.
The Advanced Neural Telecommunication Resolution Interface and Exchange (ANTRIX) is a smart network operations platform deployed across TM’s nationwide network in December 2025. It monitors network alerts, performance data and service indicators to detect issues in real time. Unlike traditional systems that relied on manual reporting and reactive processes, ANTRIX automates monitoring and response, enable faster generation of trouble tickets, restoration plans, work permits and change requests.
ANTRIX has also replaced TM’s legacy system and provides intelligent analysis tools that help identify root causes and coordinate solutions more efficiently across the network.
System for Migration & Technology Refresh of Network Element Tool (SMART-E) was developed to streamline Optical Line Terminal (OLT) migration activities during network upgrades and technology refresh programmes. Previously, migration processes involved manual configurations and extended timelines that affected inventory synchronisation and service continuity.
The platform automates the entire migration process, making it easier for systems and teams to work together. It also connects with TM’s inventory to handle key tasks automatically, such as setting up services, managing changes and carrying out checks before and after migration.

Recognised for transforming forestry assessments with AI for biodiversity conservation in Malaysia



Cyberjaya, 25 March 2025 – Telekom Research & Development Sdn Bhd (TM R&D), a subsidiary of MMU, has clinched the prestigious AI – Environmental Services category at the Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards 2025. This recognition celebrates TM R&D’s breakthrough in Smart Forestry AI Tools Enhancement, which is revolutionising forestry assessments and advancing biodiversity conservation in Malaysia.



The award-winning innovation leverages AI to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of forestry assessments, a crucial step in conserving Malaysia’s rich biodiversity. Developed in collaboration with the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM), the solution addresses key challenges in tree data collection, particularly the measurement of diameter at breast height (DBH), which is vital for calculating forest growing stock, basal area, biomass, and carbon stock.



Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, Chief Executive Officer of TM R&D, expressed her appreciation for the achievement: “At TM R&D, we are committed to harnessing AI to create real-world impact. This award reaffirms our dedication to driving innovation that not only enhances efficiency and safety in forestry assessments but also supports sustainability and biodiversity conservation. By leveraging AI, we are empowering conservation efforts and contributing to Malaysia’s climate action goals.”



The AI-powered solution, launched in 2024, utilises a mobile app that captures tree images and automatically calculates DBH without the need for additional equipment or reference objects. This innovation significantly reduces the time taken for data collection from two minutes per tree to just 20 seconds, with an impressive 96% accuracy rate in tree segmentation and an error margin of only 1.2 cm for branched and leaning trees.



Dr. Sharlene further acknowledged the crucial role of FRIM in this achievement: “We extend our gratitude to our research partners at FRIM for their invaluable expertise in forestry and biodiversity management. Their collaboration has been instrumental in ensuring our AI-driven solution delivers meaningful impact for conservation efforts.”



Traditionally, forestry assessments require ground-level measurements, which are time-consuming and pose safety risks, especially when working at heights. With TM R&D’s AI solution, the process is not only faster but also safer, enabling quicker reporting of carbon stock inventories and supporting informed decision-making for forest protection.



This innovation aligns with Malaysia’s commitment to combating climate change and preserving biodiversity. By streamlining data collection and enhancing accuracy, TM R&D’s solution is set to become a game-changer in sustainable forestry management.

Enhancing Operational Excellence: PDRM Explores TM R&D’s Latest Innovations

Under the leadership of the Ministry of Digital, Malaysia advanced smart city innovation at the <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/company/smartcityexpoworldcongress/">Smart City Expo World Congress</a> (SCEWC) 2024 in Barcelona from Nov 5-7! We were proud to join forces with MDEC, MyDIGITAL Corporation and Digital Nasional Berhad at the Malaysia Pavilion to showcase our nation’s progress in digital transformation. TM R&D showcased its Open Innovation Platform (OIP), which connected various smart city technologies for seamless integration and its Smart Integrated Dashboard (SIDA), a platform that provided an easy-to-understand overview of city data to enhance urban living. Together, these solutions demonstrated how we’re shaping a smarter, more connected Malaysia. This event opened up opportunities for R&D collaboration to drive innovation, allowing us to explore synergies with other industry leaders and urban innovators. We were honoured to welcome YB Tuan Gobind Singh Deo, Malaysia’s Digital Minister, to the Malaysia Pavilion, sharing his admiration for the innovations displayed and their potential to drive smart city advancements for Malaysia. Showcasing Malaysia’s Smart City Innovations at SCEWC 2024

Telekom Research & Development Sdn Bhd (TM R&D), the innovation arm of TM Group and a subsidiary of MMU, bagged the Digital Transformation of the Year Award (Private Sector/NGO) at the WITSA Global Innovation and Tech Excellence Awards 2024 for its innovative solution namely Mobile Intelligent Network Diagnostic System (MINDS). Held in Yerevan, Armenia, this prestigious accolade was awarded in recognition of the company’s success in developing an innovative solution that is able to seamlessly integrate disparate systems employing legacy technology.



MINDS is a homegrown solution that helps mobile service providers manage customer complaints more efficiently by correlating all the information about a customer’s network usage and experience into a single, centralised platform. This provides a complete picture of the service and enables providers to address issues accurately, often before the customer is even aware of them. By fixing problems based on real-time network data, MINDS reduces the number of complaints and speeds up problem resolution.



The solution also delivers valuable insights that help companies make more informed decisions about improving their mobile networks. These insights guide critical business decisions, leading to smoother network performance and enhanced customer satisfaction. Ultimately, MINDS not only prevents issues but also improves the overall quality of mobile services, resulting in happier customers and more efficient operations.

Besides TM R&D, the Selangor Information Technology and Digital Economy Corporation (Sidec) was awarded the Digital Opportunity/Inclusion Award (Public Sector) for its digital inclusion initiatives, which include the Selangor 1000 Digital 2024 and the Malaysia Top E-Commerce Merchant Awards. The award was accepted by Sidec’s COO, Loo Chuan Boon.

TM R&D CEO featured in the Star Biz7

Telekom Research & Development Sdn Bhd (TM R&D), the innovation arm of Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) wins the “Digital-Utilities” Award for its smart workforce management solution known as FORCE at the recent Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards 2023 (MTEA), organised by the Asian Business Review.



This is the seventh award received by TM R&D from MTEA in the last five years, spotlighting its role in accelerating the use of advanced technology and mobile-first approach to spearhead industrial productivity and operational efficiencies as Malaysia transitions into a digital economy. Through cross learnings from deployment within the TM ecosystem, TM R&D’s advanced analytics software in the FORCE platform measures and reports business performance metrics in real-time. This enables fast-paced businesses to make precise data-driven decisions to improve complex tasks scheduling of large fieldwork teams across geographies that in turn, significantly ease resource planning and operational costs.

TM Bags Top Tech Award for its Digital Workforce Solution

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Collaboration for joint research in the areas of Next Generation Passive Optical Networks to enhance bandwidth experience for users in Malaysia</li><li>TM R&D and ZTE have successfully proved an ultra-wide transmission rate of 50GPON technology.</li></ul>



 Telekom Research & Development Sdn Bhd (TM R&D), the innovation arm of Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ZTE (Malaysia) Corporation Sdn Bhd (ZTE), a global leading provider of information and communication technology solutions, to collaborate on optical network research, bringing the first 50Gbps bandwidth experience to Malaysia.



The MoU was signed by Dr Sharlene Thiagarajah, Chief Executive Officer, TM R&D and Steven Ge, Chief Executive Officer, ZTE Malaysia. Under this agreement, TM R&D and ZTE will jointly explore the capabilities of next-generation. Passive Optical Network (PON) access technology, 50GPON, to support various application scenarios. In addition, both entities will look into use cases that can deliver ultra-broadband access to the government, enterprise and consumers, as well as support the requirements of innovative services such as 5G, Cloud Virtual Reality (VR), industrial intelligent manufacturing for high bandwidth, low latency & jitter, and clock synchronisation, all of which will enhance the user experience in Malaysia.



Commenting on the MoU, Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, Chief Executive Officer, TM R&D said, “TM R&D is committed to conducting research on future technologies and innovating new value-added smarter eco-systems that will improve the quality of user experience, and ultimately bring a positive impact on their lives. This fits well into the TM Group’s transformation towards becoming a human-centred TechCo. Meanwhile, Steven Ge, Chief Executive Officer, ZTE Malaysia shared, “With Gigabit home broadband services widely used in Malaysia at present, and the basic fixed network is in the time window of evolution from GPON to 10G PON, this partnership could not have come at a better time.”

For a twist, we conducted “Ask the Doctor” session where our guests can get direct consultation on their digital transformation journey from our experts.



We also hosted a space for MMU students and lecturers to exhibit their most outstanding and innovative projects. A huge thank you to everyone who dropped by our office to enjoy some bites and laughter. We look forward to organise more fun and insightful session like this in the future!

The panel session also featured two other renowned speakers and they are YBhg. Prof. Datuk Dr. Asma Ismail FASc. Holder of Kursi Ibnu Sinar, International Islamic University, Malaysia and Dr. Chai Lay Ching, Chair, Young Scientists Network-Academy of Sciences Malaysia.
The one-hour session aims to address issues in empowering women in the higher education sector to adapt to the clash of the disruptive era and the Covid-19 pandemic thus drive the role in achieving sustainable development goals.
Dr. Sharlene shared excellent views on the current landscape of women’s leadership in the industry and its trend as well as her opinion on work and home life balance in today’s context.

TM R&D’s A.I driven contactless temperature screening solution featured in Berita Harian

TM R&D assists Orbix International School in adhering to the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) with deployment of EWAR towards curbing the spread of COVID-19 virus.



Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), through its innovation arm, TM Research & Development (TM R&D), further promotes the adoption of digital solutions in the education sector by deploying its Early Warning, Alert & Response or “EWAR” at Orbix International School (Orbix), a private school in Muar, Johor. EWAR is an Artificial Intelligence (A.I) driven contactless temperature screening solution internally-developed by TM R&D.



In an effort to digitalise the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) outlined for schools, Orbix has installed EWAR Compact, one (1) of EWAR’s product categories, within their premise to better facilitate the temperature screenings of their students, teachers and visitors towards curbing the spread of COVID-19 virus.



Commenting on the initiative, Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, Chief Executive Officer, TM R&D said, “We are honoured to be working with an educational institution such as Orbix to deploy our cost-effective and innovative solution in response to the required safety protocols. This illustrates the flexibility and readiness of education vertical in adapting to the new normal. At TM R&D, we are ever ready to assist businesses and organisations to get back on their feet safely.”



“We truly believe that deploying the EWAR Compact at schools or any educational institutions can provide students and teachers with a near-normal return to school experience as possible. EWAR Compact is an AI-driven, one-on-one contactless thermal screening solution with a high accuracy of +/- 0.3℃, fast (~1sec) detection and voice prompt. In addition, AI-based facial recognition capabilities can also be applied with the solution. With EWAR Compact, students and teachers can go to schools with peace of mind, knowing that their schools are using the most effective technology available to safeguard their health.



“Besides that, we are delighted to see more schools adopting digital solutions as this will expose teachers and students on how technology can help improve lives through safety. The exposure to EWAR Compact will also help students to experience digitalisation in action first-hand, and witness the benefits of digital adoption even before they enter the workforce. Back in July, TM R&D has successfully installed EWAR Compact at 12 selected schools under the purview of Bangsar / Pudu District Education Office (PPDBP) namely Victoria Institution, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Dato’ Lokman, SMK Seri Saujana, SMK Desa Petaling, SMK Cochrane, SMK Taman Maluri, SMK Alam Damai, SMK Bukit Jalil, SMK Dato’ Onn, SMK (P) Bandaraya, SMK Convent Jalan Peel and SMK Seri Permaisuri.



During the early stages of the Movement Control Order (MCO), TM R&D has introduced two (2) main product categories under EWAR, namely EWAR Crowd and EWAR Compact as part of its contribution in the fight against COVID-19. The solution comes with four (4) main capabilities that close the critical loop from detection to containment. It is non-intrusive and has use-cases for both crowd and one-on-one scanning, respectively.



EWAR Crowd comes with a dual-camera (thermal and optical) and is designed to conduct a rapid body temperature screening of approximately 10-15 individuals per second simultaneously at high traffic areas. It can easily be deployed in locations with mass traffic flow such as offices, shopping complexes, transportation hubs, universities, schools, tourist attractions, airports, immigration centres, and hospitals. EWAR Compact on the other hand is more suitable for a one-on-one contactless thermal screening. This can eliminate the need of the hand-held temperature taking, which can subsequently improve social distancing and minimise long queues.



Both EWAR models have been installed at more than 150 sites across several industry verticals and have gone regional to help keep businesses safe beyond Malaysian shores. The solutions have been installed at the quarantine and treatment centre for COVID-19 cases at Malaysia Agro Exposition Park (MAEPS) in Serdang, large and mid-size office lobbies, hotels, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) payment counters, various sales galleries and Gamuda Land construction sites, just to name a few.



TM R&D has been growing from strength to strength since 2016, winning seven (7) globally recognised awards over the last two (2) years. Katanya, FIRA adalah penyelesaian inovatif oleh TM R&D dalam menyediakan penggunaan jalur lebar berkelajuan tinggi yang menjimatkan bagi pengguna yang berada di kawasan luar bandar dan pinggir bandar yang tidak menerima capaian oleh Unifi atau fiber.

FIRA jalur lebar lima kali lebih tinggi

Telekom Research & Development Sdn Bhd (TM R&D) appears to have made major innovative strides in the past two years. Since 2018, the R&D unit of Telekom Malaysia Bhd has managed to achieve a 100% adoption rate for its innovations from a mere 5% previously, says TM R&D CEO Dr Sharlene Thiagarajah.



In fact, the 19-year-old firm has evolved from largely serving the TM group to serving the nation as well, as it delivered a record RM 1.6 billion in innovation impact last year, Sharlene points out, “We started largely by serving the group. But now, we see that a lot what we do can be applied outside the group. So here we are, bringing a lot of these [innovations] to the market. We have at least five ‘killer products’ that have been commercialised in the market today with external revenue and so on.”



TM R&D’s commercialised products include a contactless temperature screening solution called Early Warning, Alert & Response (EWAR), Smart Retails Analytics, Smart Water Management Systems and a data exchange platform for which it was appointed a data technology partner of Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC).



“Everything we create- all the IPs (intellectual properties)- don’t just belong to the company but to the nation. It is my goal, in a way, to transform Malaysia into more of a nation that produces rather than one that just consumes. It is good progress for us to go from R&D to ‘productising’ and commercialising things, and serving the nation, which is the bigger purpose,” Sharlene tells The Edge.



She adds that the R&D unit has generated more than 2,800 IP rights and 1,400 digital assets to date.



Most of these innovations leverage the open data platform that helps produce analytics. This, in turn, allows the firm to establish correlations between the date gathered and the contributing factors, resulting in “new revenue and cost-saving opportunities,” says Sharlene, who is a co-founder and director of a company in the automation and radio-frequency identification (RFID) space.



“For example, you put a thermometer out there and get the temperature of every minute of the day. And then you have a water tap equipped with a sensor that tracks your water consumption. Put the two together and you get a correlation that says, ‘When it is very hot, people drink more water’.



“We could then expect water consumption to go up during the hot season in Malaysia. This would allow water suppliers to ensure that their water reserves are sufficient during such times.”



Last month, TM R&D announced that as a data technology partner of MDEC, the firm would contribute its expertise to accelerate data technology adoption and develop data-driven enterprises, facilitating talent development and industry-academia collaboration. This would be done by sharing related case studies with MDEC to generate interest among business enterprises in adopting data technology.



The platform, which allows data files to be uploaded in various formats, was designed to cater for users  of all levels, from amateurs to advanced. These files will then be converted into application programming interfaces (APIs) and published on the data store.



“This allows anyone who has access to the platform to use the data for further analyses and derive useful insights,” says Sharlene, noting that the platform serves as an avenue for data owners to monetise their data.



Open data is a key focus area under the Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit’s (Mampu) Public Sector Information and Communication Technology Strategic Plan. Under Mampu’s five-year plan, Malaysia aims to be the top 30 of the Open Data Barometer (ODB) by end-2020, from No 53 in 2016. Even so, that objective may not be achieved so soon.



Malaysia is not in the latest top 30 ranking on the barometer produced by the World Wide Web Foundation. Interestingly, its neighbouring countries the Philippines and Indonesia are ranked No 19 and No 21 respectively on the list, which is led by Canada.



ODB is a global measure of how governments are publishing and using open data for accountability, innovation and social impact. Opendata-barometer.org has been publishing the top 30 countries since 2017, after coming out with the full list of rankings from 2013 to 2016.



Sharlene says open data has allowed TM R&D to expedite the process of building software by three to four times, and at reduced cost of between 30% and 70% by leveraging reusable components stored on the platform. “For example, a login page. When you have a software application, there’s a login page with buttons and functions. All these are pretty common. In the past, people would rebuild all these components such as login, authentication and feedback pages [every time they built new software].



“But if I create it once and store it as an API, then every time I build new software, I will just pull all that API[data]. Of course, you will need to standardise the language. That is why we chose an open innovation platform, which basically allows any language.



“There are a lot of technical details-how you store it, how you reduce power consumption when you store data and so on. And all this is really where we bring down the cost creating software.”

EWAR, A.I. driven contactless temperature screening solution made in Malaysia has now entered the international market



Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), through its innovation arm, TM Research & Development (TM R&D), is expanding the delivery of its Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) driven contactless temperature screening solution – Early Warning, Alert & Response or “EWAR” – to Maldives. For the expansion, TM R&D is working alongside Dhiraagu, the leading and largest provider of telecommunications and digital services in Maldives, to assist local businesses in resuming full operations while maintaining a safe environment by installing EWAR at their premises. This initiative is set to provide businesses in Maldives and their stakeholders with the confidence for business continuity through the provisioning of the complete solution.



 Commenting on the collaboration, Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, Chief Executive Officer, TM R&D said, “We are excited to collaborate with Dhiraagu to introduce EWAR, a reliable and accurate contactless thermal screening solution to businesses in Maldives. Both EWAR products also come with cloud-based software and real-time monitoring app which makes this innovative solution unique. If any visitor entering the premises records a higher temperature, an alert will be triggered and a notification will be sent to the mobile device of the designated person in charge. The system also allows storing of individual temperature reports over a cloud system where it can be accessed remotely for tracking or analysis.

TM R&D CEO Interview: Innovating Malaysia’s Digital Future!

Empowering students of higher learning institutions to create and innovate



 In its continuous effort to empower the society through education and research, Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), through its innovation arm, TM Research & Development (TM R&D), has contributed pre-owned research and development (R&D) equipment, components, and materials to local universities worth RM3.5 million. The contribution aims to rehome high technology equipment to increase students’ interest in science and technology, towards producing high-skilled workforce for the job market.



 Commenting on the initiative, Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, Chief Executive Officer, TM R&D said, “TM R&D believes that a strong R&D culture is important to elevate Malaysia as a Digital Nation. By exposing students to research equipment, we hope this shall complement the theoretical studies in the classroom. This encapsulates our strategic role as a catalyst in grooming an industry forward talent pool, which is a key component in driving the nation’s digital aspiration.”



 The initiative which began in November last year, was led by Wan Razli Wan Abdullah, Head of  Innovation Business Operation Division, TM R&D where technology-related equipment and materials were distributed to four (4) local universities namely Multimedia University (MMU)’s Faculty of Engineering; Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM)’s Faculty of Engineering; Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR)’s Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science; and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM)’s Institute of Microengineering and Nanoelectronics (IMEN).



 The most recent initiative was to rehome the Low Temperature Co-Fire Ceramic (LTCC) equipment stack valued at RM1.79 million, to UPM’s Faculty of Engineering. The technology is used in the assembly and multi-layer packaging of electronic components for the electronics industry. Notable items that were contributed to UPM include a KEKO Printing System, Ceramic Foil Stacker, Viscometer, and Isostatic Laminator Machine.



 The Faculty of Engineering at MMU received specialised scientific equipment for innovative research including the ability to support manufacturing process of medical electronics devices, microelectronics devices, integrated circuits (ICs) and Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED), worth RM 1.26 million while UKM’s Institute of Microengineering and Nanoelectronics received a 3-D Contact Optical Profiler worth RM495,000.



 “We are happy to support TM Group’s Corporate Responsibility (CR) focus to empower students through innovation and technology. With access to high technology equipment, we hope the students will be able to create solutions to benefit humanity. One of our aspirations at TM R&D is to drive a culture of producers, not consumers. We believe everything we create and produce are indirectly assets of the nation, so through efforts such as this, we aspire to empower the leaders of tomorrow with relevant skills in innovation and technology to make life and business easier for a better Malaysia,” Dr. Sharlene added. 



In addition, TM R&D has also contributed cleanroom consumable items such as gloves, lab coats, masks and equipment to the Malaysian Nuclear Agency’s Technology Industry Division. To assist Malaysians to bounce back safer from the Covid-19 pandemic in the new normal period, TM R&D has also developed and deployed an Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) driven contactless temperature screening solution called Early Warning, Alert & Response or “EWAR” at various business premises, mosques, schools towards ensuring the safety of their visitors and workforce.



 TM R&D is growing from strength to strength since 2016, winning seven (7) globally recognised awards over the last two (2) years and has raised its innovation adoption rate from 5% to 100% within 2 years. TM R&D has generated more than 2,800 IPRs and 1,400 digital assets to-date. TM R&D has been selected as Finalist for TM Forum’s Excellence Awards 2020!

Installs ONE PASS and EWAR Screening Solutions at 17 selected schools for safer teaching and learning environment



With the reopening of schools nationwide scheduled on 24 June 2020 after a prolonged closure due to the Covid-19 outbreak, Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) continues to extend its assistance as a responsible corporate organisation by deploying an innovative screening solution to selected schools. The solution deployment is hoped to assist the schools in providing a safer environment for its teaching and learning activities as well as ensuring the health and safety of the students as well teachers in the ‘new normal’ situation. 



TM, in collaboration with Ministry of Education (MOE) will install its smart digital health screening solution, called TM ONE Predictive Analytics Screening Solution or “ONE PASS” at five (5) schools. ONE PASS also carries the Early Warning, Alert and Response system (EWAR) which is a state-of-the art solution developed by TM Research & Development Sdn Bhd (TM R&D), TM’s innovation arm. The installation of ONE PASS at three (3) schools – SMK Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur; SMK Presint 16 (1), Putrajaya; and Sekolah Sultan Alam Shah, Putrajaya has been completed while the installations for two (2) more schools – Sekolah Menengah Sains Teluk Intan, Perak and Tahfiz – Ma’ahad An Noer, Janda Baik, Pahang are expected to be completed by 29 June 2020. 



Through a recent collaboration between TM and Bangsar / Pudu District Education Office (PPDBP) for TM Future Skills programme, the Company via TM R&D has installed its EWAR solution at 12 schools in the PPDBP area. In addition, the schools also received 50 sets of 3D printed face shields, courtesy of TM, demonstrating the usage of TM 3Ducation 3D printing module which is part of the TM Future Skills programme. 



Commenting on the initiative, Izlyn Ramli, Vice President, Group Brand and Communication, TM said, “We share the concerns of parents, teachers and the MOE on the health and safety of our children returning to school. To kick start our efforts in assisting the education communities to adapt to the ‘new normal’, we are very happy to implement ONE PASS and EWAR at these selected schools. This is part of our Corporate Responsibility (CR) initiatives that serve three (3) pillars – Economic, Environment and Social (EES) – to benefit more Malaysians. We are happy to embark on this latest initiative for the Education sector under the Social pillar. The solutions will enable teachers to conduct teaching and learning activities as smooth as possible, whilst providing assurance to the parents on the students’ health and safety. We will continue to expand the deployment to more schools as we continuously adapt our services and solutions for our customers and Malaysians in general in going through this unprecedented period.” 



ONE PASS is a smart, contactless health screening and monitoring solution with real-time temperature updates at an accuracy to within +/- 0.3 degree Celsius for up to 100 persons a minute within the range of between 1 meter to 3 meters. This will enable the school administrators to scan students’ temperatures without contact in a fast and accurate manner. 



 The real time digital solution includes a Visitor Management System (VMS), an employee/visitor management app developed in-house for self-declaration assessment and deployment of thermal camera and sensors to check body temperature prior to entering a building or premise. VMS is capable of storing 25,000 user profiles and allows for a comprehensive on-premise tracking, along with open Application Programming Interface (API) that allows easy integration with other predictive analytics engine, pandemic Geographic Information System (GIS) and contact tracing system. As the solution is connected to a powerful analytics platform which enables mass individual analysis and swift in-building people tracking from a centralised dashboard, the data can also be integrated into the schools’ attendance system.



The data from VMS and the thermal cameras are hosted in secured, world-class TM ONE data centre. 



Powered by TM ONE Cloud α, the solution is supported by Artificial Intelligent (AI) that digitally collates data on a centralised dashboard based on visitors’ information management for reporting and analytics. This enables organisations to react promptly should any potential health risk arises, hence real time escalation to the relevant emergency response teams and authorities can be done as well as prevents new infections. Besides that, the solution also enables premise owners to swiftly and effectively track their visitors and employees. 



Besides that, TM recently handed over 150 sets of 3D printed face shields to Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Paya Rumput (SMK Paya Rumput) in Melaka, one of its adopted school under TM School Adoption programme. The contribution serves as a good exposure to the students of the school on how the TM 3Ducation 3D printing module can provide solutions to real-life problems.

TM Assists Schools to Reopen Safely with Innovative Smart Digital Health Screening Solutions

The Company supports Gamuda Land’s efforts in managing COVID-19 by deploying the AI contactless temperature screening solution at their busiest locations



Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), through its innovation arm, TM Research & Development (TM R&D), has recently installed its contactless temperature screening solution called Early Warning, Alert & Response or “EWAR” at two (2) of Gamuda Land’s premises.



 The deployment of the innovative solution from TM R&D is amongst one of Gamuda Land’s precautionary measures in ensuring the safety of their workforce and managing its business operations during the new normal period. The standard operating procedures (SOPs) for companies during the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) and Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) set by the Government includes body temperature screening upon entry, social distancing, good personal hygiene and making sure that each employee as well as visitor at the business premises is recorded upon entry.



Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, Chief Executive Officer, TM R&D said, “In line with pandemic precautions and government SOPs for companies during CMCO and RMCO, we are thrilled to install our Artificial Intelligence (AI) driven temperature screening solution at Gamuda Land’s premises towards helping them to maintain employees and visitors’ safety by installing EWAR at their premises. We developed the EWAR as an “all-in-one” contactless thermal screening solution with a high accuracy of +/- 0.3℃, aimed at assisting businesses in their first step to stop the spread of the disease. So for companies that are looking for a reliable, high accuracy contactless thermal screening solution, EWAR is the right solution for you.”



TM R&D has developed two (2) main product categories under EWAR namely EWAR Crowds and EWAR Compact. EWAR Crowds is equipped with a dual-camera (thermal and optical) and designed to conduct a rapid body temperature screening of approximately 10-15 individuals per second simultaneously at high traffic areas. The solution is non-intrusive and can easily be deployed in locations with mass traffic flow such as offices, shopping complexes, transportation hubs, universities, schools, tourist attractions, airports, immigration centres, and hospitals.



 Meanwhile, EWAR Compact is more suitable for a one-on-one contactless thermal screening to eliminate the need of the hand-held temperature taking, which can subsequently improve social distancing and minimise long queues.



TM R&D has installed both EWAR models at Gamuda Land and are working closely to integrate the solution with Gamuda Land’s internal applications to create a smoother entry into their work premises for their workers.



 While the pandemic has shown positive signs of recovery among the locals, it was recently reported by the Ministry of Health (MOH) that there are still positive COVID-19 cases detected at construction sites creating new clusters in Malaysia and all construction companies have been urged to adhere to the guidelines in order to continue their construction works.



“With so much fear among developers and construction companies to operate at full capacity with the threat of the spread of the virus, we have identified the need for a solution that allows them to minimise physical contact at a time of social distancing and would help the workers to feel secure. As the innovation arm of TM, we are ready to contribute our knowledge and expertise to businesses that require assistance in complying with the SOPs and implementing the new normal,” she added.



Other features available for Gamuda Land with the installation of EWAR include a real-time monitoring app and early detection which can be performed with minimal human intervention so that the next necessary measures such as isolation and treatment can be done promptly.



 “At Gamuda Land, we take our COVID-19 precautionary measures seriously with stringent SOPs in place to safeguard our workers as well as visitors to our experience galleries. We are continuously looking at more efficient and safer ways to improve our measures. Data Exchange Platform enables open data access for Malaysians and the global community



Telekom Malaysia Berhad
(TM), through its innovation arm, TM Research & Development (TM R&D), recently
launched a Data Exchange Platform, with the primary role of being a one-stop data
exchange centre that will facilitate and accelerate data sharing in order to
bolster research efforts in combating the COVID-19 pandemic.



Fully
supported by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), this initiative shall expedite the access
to data for developers, students, scientists and medical practitioners as well
as government agencies to gather new insights on the pandemic and eventually pave
the way for major breakthroughs.



Dr.
Sharlene Thiagarajah, Chief Executive Officer, TM R&D said: “We are
delighted to launch this Data Exchange Platform as a one-stop centre for open
data sharing related to the COVID-19 pandemic. This platform is open to
everyone, both locally and globally, to access data, share data analyse and
utilise data for the benefit of all.”



When the
World Health Organisation (WHO) declared COVID-19 as a global pandemic,
businesses and enterprises around the world were racing against time to find
solutions not only to mitigate its exponential spread but also eradicate it
once and for all. 



“COVID-19 presents a
unique and significant challenge and we believe that data plays a critical role
in helping experts find solutions to fight this global outbreak. For
researchers, data scientists, developers or any of us to work efficiently, access
to data is key. TM R&D is a strong advocate of sharing ‘open data’ in order
to harness the power of the community to work towards providing better overall insights
on this current pandemic. These insights shall not be limited to health and
medical areas only where a lot of tracking and information are already emerging,
but also on the socio-economic front
with changes in lifestyle and impact to families, businesses as well as the
local and global economy,” she added.



The platform is tailored to be easily navigated even for those with little to zero programming background. With just a few clicks, individuals can simply upload data files in various formats. It then converts those files into Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and will publish them on the data store. Anyone who has the access can use the data for further analyses and derive useful insights.



For advanced users, the platform
enables them to fine tune the data APIs by setting different access permission
levels, managing sandboxing capabilities, generating detailed analytics of data
usage and a lot more. The most sustainable feature of the platform is the ability
for data owners to monetise their data through this platform.



This one-stop data exchange centre will also allow industries
to better understand consumer behavioural changes, movement patterns and impact
on businesses, hence enabling governments and economists to view the effects on
certain sectors that may not have been obvious in the initial stage. Data on changes
of purchasing habits or whether people are collectively spending more or less
on food against beauty products, travelling patterns,

This Data Exchange Platform is built on TM R&D’s Open
Innovation Platform (OIP), Malaysia’s first Open Software Development Platform.
It consists
of a data brokerage platform, an API store-front and an end-to-end (e2e)
ecosystem for the rapid development of smarter Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR4.0)
services that enable the creation of new revenue opportunities.



The
development of Data Exchange Platform is among the initiatives under MDEC’s
Data Technology Partnership Programme where MDEC has appointed TM R&D to be
its Data Technology Partner for the programme. As an MDEC Data Technology
partner, TM R&D is set to accelerate data technology adoption and develop
Data-Driven Decision (DDD) Enterprises. TM R&D will also be facilitating
talent development and industry-academic collaboration in addition to building
a vibrant data technology ecosystem.

on the move, Ir. Dr Karl Ng Kah Hou, Director of Data Ecosystem Development,
MDEC said, “We are excited with the launch of the Data Exchange Platform. This
is the end-result of a successful synergy between TM R&D and MDEC. Designed
to collect and disseminate data about the pandemic, it will pool all data into
one focal point and empower researchers, data scientists, and analysts to
accelerate their efforts in finding solutions for COVID-19.”

TM R&D participates in TM Forum Excellence Awards 2020

TM R&D’s innovative solution helps in early detection of high temperature among medical teams and frontliners 



As part of its
contribution for the fight against COVID-19, Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) through
its innovation arm, TM Research & Development (TM R&D) recently deployed
its innovative solution called Early Warning, Alert & Response or “EWAR”
to help in the screening of high temperature amongst medical teams and
frontliners at the quarantine and treatment centre for COVID-19 cases at Malaysia
Agro Exposition Park (MAEPS), Serdang.



EWAR is TM
R&D’s latest commercial solution that is able to measure and mass detect
individuals with high body temperature in crowded areas. High temperature is
amongst the initial symptom to look out for in potential detection of viral
diseases. EWAR is developed with a higher accuracy function in comparison to
most off-the-shelf handheld thermometer scanners which eliminates multiple
time-consuming manual body temperature screening processes. 



By installing
EWAR at the quarantine and treatment centre, the medical teams and frontliners
will be able to smoothly and efficiently move through the screening process as
the solution is able to rapidly mass screen between 10 – 15 individuals per
second simultaneously. In addition, this solution would also allow them to
reduce their manpower requirements.



Commenting on this latest initiative, Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, Chief Executive Officer, TM R&D said, “We are honoured to contribute to the fight against COVID-19. Installation of EWAR thermal cameras at MAEPS will help to facilitate contactless mass screening of the medical teams and front-liners which we believe will greatly increase the operational efficiency of the centre. The solution also requires minimal human supervision hence the medical teams can focus on their core duties of providing necessary treatment to the patrons at the centre.”



“EWAR is part of our continuous efforts in making a difference for the nation and several more are in the pipeline,” she added.



Meanwhile,
Dr. Md. Anuar Abd Samad @ Mahmood, Director of Quarantine Centre for Low Risk
COVID-19 at MAEPS said, “We are pleased to be working together with TM R&D
in installing the EWAR thermal cameras. With the digital technology advancement
that this solution provides, we believe this move bodes well with our strategy
to enhance the facilities at MAEPS. Taking pro-active measures is important for
us to accommodate the medical frontliners in treating the COVID-19 patients
efficiently.”



EWAR also
comes with cloud-based software and mobile application which makes this
innovative solution unique. This feature enables all information captured by
the camera to be shared and escalated in real-time to any relevant authorities
for planning and emergency response purposes. 



This
component of EWAR is critical in minimising the need for human contact as the
data is available in real-time which allows Ministry of Health (MOH) to
remotely monitor the status especially during night time (non-peak hours) when the
medical Team Leader may not be around.

TM Installs EWAR at MAEPS Quarantine and Treatment Centre  in Continuous Fight Against COVID-19

TM R&D researchers work tirelessly to develop state-of-the-art solution to help curb COVID-19 .



As a responsible corporate citizen equally affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) through its innovation arm, TM Research & Development (TM R&D) unveils its latest state-of-the-art solution to help in early detection of abnormal temperature among crowds. Early Warning, Alert & Response or “EWAR” is TM R&D’s latest solution that is able to measure and detect individuals with abnormal body temperature at crowded areas which is among the initial symptoms to look out for in potential cases of viral diseases such as SARS, Ebola and the recent COVID-19. The solution is equipped with a dual camera (thermal and optical) that is able to mass detect abnormal temperatures of approximately 15 individuals per second simultaneously. 



The project to develop EWAR kicked off in mid-February 2020 and it was developed on TM R&D’s Open Innovation Platform (OIP), Malaysia’s 1st Open Software Development Platform, which is a robust digital infrastructure that provides a complete eco-system for the creation of new services on the go. The platform amongst others comprises a data brokerage system, an Application Programming Interface (API) aggregation infrastructure and an end-to-end Internet of Things (IoT) platform for rapid service creation. In 2019 alone, more than 27 million API calls have been running on the platform and the number is growing by the day. 



Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, Chief Executive Officer, TM R&D said, “We are excited to unveil our latest innovation “EWAR” and are confident that this solution will greatly help in early detection of high or abnormal temperatures in crowds. As the solution is non-intrusive, it can easily be deployed in offices, shopping complexes, transportation hubs, universities, schools, tourist attractions, airports, immigration centres, hospitals, in fact almost any locations with foot traffic.”



Early detection, isolating and treating cases, contact tracing and social distancing measures are crucial to assist in preventing the virus from spreading. By using EWAR, real-time monitoring and early detection can be performed with minimal human intervention so the next necessary measures such as isolation and treatment can be done promptly. With IoT capabilities from OIP, contact tracing can be successfully achieved as data and information captured on individuals with high fever can be dispersed in real-time to relevant authorities for planning and emergency response purposes. OIP can also communicate with the National COVID-19’s response team for early containment. 



Using Artificial Intelligence (AI), data on age and gender can be captured allowing users to predict the different age and gender trajectories. AI analyses the existing patterns to predict what might happen next in a sequence. EWAR’s dashboard significantly provides live and historical data analysis as well as geolocation alerts for monitoring purposes.



“We believe that the development of this EWAR is timely and it is very suitable to be used in crowded areas, both indoor and outdoor. With its easy implementation, we will be able to greatly assist in curbing infectious viruses such as COVID-19 and ultimately win the battle,” she added.
