TM R&D Secures Double Wins at Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards 2026
Recognised for advancing AI-driven network assurance and automation in telecommunications
CYBERJAYA, 7 April 2026 – Telekom Research & Development Sdn Bhd (TM R&D), the innovation arm of TM Group and a subsidiary of Multimedia University (MMU), has won the Network and Broadband – Telecommunications and Automation – Telecommunications categories at the Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards 2026. The recognition celebrates the development of two platforms, ANTRIX and SMART-E which enhance network assurance and automate large-scale infrastructure migrations across Telekom Malaysia Berhad’s (TM) nationwide network.
Developed by TM R&D in collaboration with Group Network Technology of TM, both platforms address long-standing operational challenges in network assurance and infrastructure upgrades while improving efficiency, visibility and service continuity across TM’s broadband ecosystem.
The Advanced Neural Telecommunication Resolution Interface and Exchange (ANTRIX) is a smart network operations platform deployed across TM’s nationwide network in December 2025. It monitors network alerts, performance data and service indicators to detect issues in real time. Unlike traditional systems that relied on manual reporting and reactive processes, ANTRIX automates monitoring and response, enable faster generation of trouble tickets, restoration plans, work permits and change requests.
ANTRIX has also replaced TM’s legacy system and provides intelligent analysis tools that help identify root causes and coordinate solutions more efficiently across the network.
System for Migration & Technology Refresh of Network Element Tool (SMART-E) was developed to streamline Optical Line Terminal (OLT) migration activities during network upgrades and technology refresh programmes. Previously, migration processes involved manual configurations and extended timelines that affected inventory synchronisation and service continuity.
The platform automates the entire migration process, making it easier for systems and teams to work together. It also connects with TM’s inventory to handle key tasks automatically, such as setting up services, managing changes and carrying out checks before and after migration.
Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, Chief Executive Officer of TM R&D, said the recognition reflects the organisation’s continued commitment to research driven innovation that delivers real value to the business and to our customers.

As part of our Big Idea Lecture Series, we were honoured to host Prof. Dr. Ir. @ZainalAripinZakariah, former GM of Research at TM R&D, who shared the story of how he helped transform Telekom R&D from the ground up.
In 1993, the unit was small, the resources limited and the path uncertain. But instead of waiting for perfect conditions, he made the decision to move forward, to jump-start research efforts by building partnerships, activating talent and driving progress one step at a time.
His talk reminded us that progress starts with action. That being resourceful, bold and connected to purpose can spark growth even in challenging times.
As we move forward, we carry this mindset with us. Because to shape the future, we must be willing to start, even when the way isn’t clear yet.

Shaping the Future, One Step at a Time

We recently visited the TM One Innovation Lab to see how our innovations are being translated into real-world solutions. It was an opportunity for our researchers to connect directly with the business, gain a deeper understanding of real-world challenges and witness how our solutions are already making a meaningful impact.
It was exciting to see TM R&D solutions such as FORCE and CONVES being showcased by <a class="EaWzLdfjwgloMRCqeXHrsnLLcqdpxKtzA " href="https://www.linkedin.com/company/tm-0ne/" target="_self" data-test-app-aware-link="">TM One</a> to help clients digitalise and future-proof their operations. We also explored several impactful technologies namely Smart Predictive Maintenance and Geospatial Tourism Solutions, all aligned with the broader vision of Smart City Innovations.
This visit wasn’t just about ideas. It was about bringing together people, expertise and purpose. We’re driven to explore what’s next, from Generative AI to digital platforms and to turn those ideas into real-world impact.

TM R&D was honoured to showcase our in-house metaverse education solution to YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the recent Temu Anwar @ MMU Programme and the launch of the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence & Engineering (FAIE).
The solution demonstrates how education can move beyond traditional boundaries into an immersive 3D environment. This enables students and communities to learn, collaborate, and create in new and impactful ways. More than a technology showcase, it reflects TM R&D’s commitment to reimagining education by nurturing talent, unlocking creativity, uplifting learning experiences and enabling access for everyone, everywhere.

Driving Malaysia’s Digital Future with Metaverse Learning

TM R&D recently joined 𝗖𝗗𝗢 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗩𝗘𝗫 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱, the Public Sector Chief Digital Officers Conference, which brought together over 500 digital leaders from ministries and agencies. Themed “Agile and Intelligent Digital Leaders of a New Era,” the event focused on shaping the next phase of Malaysia’s digital transformation.
Together with Credence, we showcased two of our public sector-focused solutions:

Recognised for transforming forestry assessments with AI for biodiversity conservation in Malaysia



Cyberjaya, 25 March 2025 – Telekom Research & Development Sdn Bhd (TM R&D), a subsidiary of MMU, has clinched the prestigious AI – Environmental Services category at the Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards 2025. This recognition celebrates TM R&D’s breakthrough in Smart Forestry AI Tools Enhancement, which is revolutionising forestry assessments and advancing biodiversity conservation in Malaysia.



The award-winning innovation leverages AI to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of forestry assessments, a crucial step in conserving Malaysia’s rich biodiversity. Developed in collaboration with the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM), the solution addresses key challenges in tree data collection, particularly the measurement of diameter at breast height (DBH), which is vital for calculating forest growing stock, basal area, biomass, and carbon stock.



Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, Chief Executive Officer of TM R&D, expressed her appreciation for the achievement: “At TM R&D, we are committed to harnessing AI to create real-world impact. This award reaffirms our dedication to driving innovation that not only enhances efficiency and safety in forestry assessments but also supports sustainability and biodiversity conservation. By leveraging AI, we are empowering conservation efforts and contributing to Malaysia’s climate action goals.”



The AI-powered solution, launched in 2024, utilises a mobile app that captures tree images and automatically calculates DBH without the need for additional equipment or reference objects. This innovation significantly reduces the time taken for data collection from two minutes per tree to just 20 seconds, with an impressive 96% accuracy rate in tree segmentation and an error margin of only 1.2 cm for branched and leaning trees.



Dr. Sharlene further acknowledged the crucial role of FRIM in this achievement: “We extend our gratitude to our research partners at FRIM for their invaluable expertise in forestry and biodiversity management. Their collaboration has been instrumental in ensuring our AI-driven solution delivers meaningful impact for conservation efforts.”



Traditionally, forestry assessments require ground-level measurements, which are time-consuming and pose safety risks, especially when working at heights. With TM R&D’s AI solution, the process is not only faster but also safer, enabling quicker reporting of carbon stock inventories and supporting informed decision-making for forest protection.



This innovation aligns with Malaysia’s commitment to combating climate change and preserving biodiversity. By streamlining data collection and enhancing accuracy, TM R&D’s solution is set to become a game-changer in sustainable forestry management.

We recently had the privilege of hosting delegates from 𝘗𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘴 𝘋𝘪𝘳𝘢𝘫𝘢 𝘔𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘺𝘴𝘪𝘢 (PDRM) at our office. This visit was part of an initiative to showcase TM R&D’s latest innovations. We were proud to join forces with MDEC, MyDIGITAL Corporation and Digital Nasional Berhad at the Malaysia Pavilion to showcase our nation’s progress in digital transformation. TM R&D showcased its Open Innovation Platform (OIP), which connected various smart city technologies for seamless integration and its Smart Integrated Dashboard (SIDA), a platform that provided an easy-to-understand overview of city data to enhance urban living. TM R&D Showcases Innovation for a Smarter, Safer Future at KPKT’s Innovation Day 2024

Telekom Research & Development Sdn Bhd (TM R&D), the innovation arm of TM Group and a subsidiary of MMU, bagged the Digital Transformation of the Year Award (Private Sector/NGO) at the WITSA Global Innovation and Tech Excellence Awards 2024 for its innovative solution namely Mobile Intelligent Network Diagnostic System (MINDS). Held in Yerevan, Armenia, this prestigious accolade was awarded in recognition of the company’s success in developing an innovative solution that is able to seamlessly integrate disparate systems employing legacy technology.



MINDS is a homegrown solution that helps mobile service providers manage customer complaints more efficiently by correlating all the information about a customer’s network usage and experience into a single, centralised platform. This provides a complete picture of the service and enables providers to address issues accurately, often before the customer is even aware of them. By fixing problems based on real-time network data, MINDS reduces the number of complaints and speeds up problem resolution.



The solution also delivers valuable insights that help companies make more informed decisions about improving their mobile networks. These insights guide critical business decisions, leading to smoother network performance and enhanced customer satisfaction. Ultimately, MINDS not only prevents issues but also improves the overall quality of mobile services, resulting in happier customers and more efficient operations.

Safeguarding the Future of Work: TM R&D Showcases Smart Helmet and E-PTW

The topic of environmental sustainability has always been close to our hearts. At the recent ‘Digital Technology for Climate Governance’ event, hosted by Multimedia University in conjunction with the National Climate Governance Summit 2024, we were truly inspired. TM R&D CEO, Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, was invited to participate in a panel discussion on ‘Harnessing Digital Technology for Climate Action.’ The session provided valuable insights into the intersection of digital technology and climate governance as well as exploring practical applications and future directions for leveraging innovation to drive sustainable environmental practices. During the session, Dr. Sharlene outlined three key pillars of climate governance: 𝗠𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, which focuses on managing the immediate risks of climate change; 𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, aimed at building resilience within the economy and ensuring self-sufficiency knowing that the climate risk is coming; and 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, which emphasises adopting solutions in a way that does not negatively impact businesses or the economy. Dr. Sharlene also highlighted the critical role of digital technology in advancing these pillars, using TM R&D’s Smart Water Integrated Management System (SWIMS) as an example. SWIMS is a homegrown solution that provides real-time monitoring and data analysis of water resources, helps manage water consumption, detects water leakages and optimises water distribution. Transformative technologies are revolutionising our everyday lives. More and more global companies are slowly but surely gravitating their way for collaboration and building hubs as the Malaysian government continues accelerating investments into the AI infrastructure. In line with this, we hosted our flagship event, the TM R&D Tech Mocktail, with the theme “Transformative opportunities with AI everywhere.” This fifth cycle of the series, where brilliant minds met, featured discussions on various AI topics including finding the balance between adopting technology to achieve efficiency, productivity, and exponential growth. The event was led by Dato’ Zainal Abidin Putih, Chairman of TM, and Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazliham Mohd Su’ud, President & Chief Executive Officer of MMU / Chairman of TM R&D. We were also honoured to welcome Dato’ Sri Idris Jala, Chairman of PEMANDU Associates, who captivated the audience with an insightful keynote on transformative leadership in a digital world. His address highlighted that to drive the AI ecosystem in Malaysia, leaders should focus on pursuing “the Game of Impossible” by setting ambitious goals that challenge the status quo. TM R&D Tech Mocktail 2024

TM R&D welcomes YBhg. Dato’ Ts. Dr. Hj. Aminuddin Hashim, Secretary General of the Ministry of Science, Technology & Innovation (MOSTI) and delegates to our office here in Cyberjaya. During the visit, our CEO, Dr. Sharlene briefed on TM R&D and we showcased our labs, along with various innovative solutions. These include the Smart Forest Dashboard, designed to facilitate seamless tracking and monitoring of diverse forest activities. Next, we presented our Intelligent Connectivity Solutions, namely FIRA and SIERA which provide fast connectivity solutions in rural, suburban, and infra-blind spots. YBhg. Dato was impressed with FIRA and expressed his keen interest. Additionally, we introduced the SCARLET solution for off-grid power issues and backup power alternatives. Thank you to YBhg. TM R&D Showcases Cutting-Edge Innovations to MOSTI Secretary General During Cyberjaya Visit

The latest stocktake of global corporate net-zero objectives reveals a concerning trend – while over one-third of the world’s largest publicly traded companies have committed to some form of net-zero target, a staggering 65% are failing to meet even the most basic reporting protocols.
This glaring gap between intention and action poses a significant threat to our collective goal of achieving a climate-safe future. Bridging this gap demands a step away from the status quo of “business as usual” thinking, which drives the twin crises of climate change and biodiversity loss that we currently face.
Recently, Professor Donald Lessard from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) popped over to TM R&D to give an open and fresh take on what he terms as “critical sustainability imperatives”. We delved deep into the urgent need for radical changes in business models, technology and policy, recognising that addressing these challenges demands a multifaceted approach from corporate players to government law makers.
In our pursuit of decarbonisation, we must ensure that our transformational efforts strike a balance between corporate profitability and sustainability goals. Our transformation plans should demonstrate how we’ve weighed factors such as local environmental impact, risk and reward analysis, and government policies to incentivise and support our initiatives.

Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, CEO of TM R&D, was recently invited to participate in a panel session as part of Maybank’s IWD programme. The session, themed ‘Inspiring Inclusion & The Courage to Challenge’, featured Dr. Sharlene and other esteemed leaders namely Datuk (Dr) Nora Abd Manaf, Maybank Group Chief Human Capital Officer, Dr. Sanjay Sarma, CEO, President & Dean of Asia School of Business and Dato’ Fadza Anuar, Co-Founder of FashionValet.

Our CEO, Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah recently teamed up with other inspiring leaders for a panel session as part of Tenaga Nasional Berhad’s Woman In Leadership – 𝑊𝑎𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑎 𝐼𝑛𝑠𝑝𝑖𝑟𝑎𝑠𝑖 𝑃𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑠 𝐺𝑒𝑛𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑠𝑖 Programme. Dr. Sharlene was invited as a panelist for the Core Leadership (ENERGY LEADER) Forum with the title 𝑀𝑒𝑚𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑘𝑎𝑠𝑎 𝑊𝑎𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑎 𝐷𝑎𝑙𝑎𝑚 𝑆𝑒𝑘𝑡𝑜𝑟 𝑇𝑒𝑛𝑎𝑔𝑎 – 𝑀𝑒𝑛𝑢𝑗𝑢 𝐾𝑒 𝐴𝑟𝑎ℎ 𝑀𝑎𝑠𝑎 𝐷𝑒𝑝𝑎𝑛 𝑌𝑎𝑛𝑔 𝑀𝑎𝑚𝑝𝑎𝑛.
The panel session brought together some of the brightest minds namely Dr Amani Salim, an Inventor, Engineer-Scientist and nanoSkunkWorkX CTO & Co-Founder and Ms Lee Pui Yong, Chief Sustainability Officer of TNB to discuss on women empowerment towards a sustainable future.
In the session, Dr. Sharlene reflected on her career journey, highlighting significant moments from her early days to her current role as CEO of TM R&D. She shared that transitioning from R&D to corporate was a challenging moment, but with the guidance of a great mentor, she successfully navigated and overcame the obstacles shaping her into who she is today. In addition, Dr. Sharlene shared insights on how women leaders can foster collaborative partnerships by effectively communicating and connecting with others.

TM R&D had the privilege to participate in a showcase during the launch of TM One’s Innovation and Enterprise 5G Labs event, graced by the presence of the esteemed Minister of Digital, YB Gobind Singh Deo.



We demonstrated our innovative Smart Forestry, Smart Dashboard and Workforce Management solutions highlighting our commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology for a sustainable development and data-driven decision-making.



Smart Forestry enables seamless tracking and monitoring of various forest activities. The Smart Dashboard features an executive dashboard designed for Pihak Berkuasa Tempatan (PBTs), showcasing TM R&D’s capabilities in data and IoT integration. This integration facilitates fast and accurate decision-making for PBTs.



Workforce Management digitises the workforce by streamlining task distribution and seamlessly connecting all stakeholders on a single platform. In addition, TM R&D revealed our latest 5G Smart Helmet solution and Connected Vehicle platform which enable organisations to operate and track their team and assets.

In conjunction with the ‘Majlis Amanat Tahun Baharu 2024’ with YB Tuan Chang Lih Kang, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), TM R&D was invited to participate in its showcase. Held at the ‘Dewan Tun Canselor’ MMU Cyberjaya, TM R&D had the opportunity to present two of our innovative solutions to YB Tuan Chang Lih Kang – our smart forestry dashboard to facilitate seamless tracking and monitoring of various forest activities as well as the data-driven smart helmet to ensure workforce’s ultimate safety.



Some of the ‘Majlis Amanat Tahun Baharu 2024’ highlights include – MOSTI will focus on several priority areas namely Hydrogen, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Biotechnology – Food Security & Precision Medicine, Startups Ecosystem and Space Technology. On AI, MOSTI will continue to lead efforts to make AI more accessible by ensuring the development of ethical technology through AI Ethics Guidelines that will be launched in the first quarter of this year.

Innovating for the Future: TM R&D Showcases Solutions at MOSTI’s ‘Majlis Amanat Tahun Baharu 2024’

<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/company/telekom-research-and-development/?miniCompanyUrn=urn%3Ali%3Afs_miniCompany%3A702187"> </a>The race towards net zero is not your average competition – it is a global sprint to move into a sustainable future, with nations, businesses and individuals all vying for the gold medal in carbon reduction. Imagine this, in 2023, some countries experienced the hottest ever temperatures in history. This has been a huge wake-up call to many to start putting in efforts to combat climate change before there is nothing left to fight for. Here at TM R&D, we were fortunate to have Prof. John E. Fernández from the renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) shed some light on how climate change has turned the world on its axis and also, answered the possibilities of whether we can achieve this race by 2050. The short answer to that is yes, thankfully, we are a sticky species and won’t go extinct. But, as he says, there is an enormous increase in greenhouse gas emissions particularly from emerging economies catching up on development. Yes, more efforts must be made from these markets but also much is expected from wealthy countries to weigh in and shoulder greater responsibilities. Prof Fernández explained what are the tipping points we should be aware of, and how research and development can play a pivotal role in combatting different factors in this critical journey. Areas like AI, energy, materials and technology fall under a broad spectrum but have vast potential to be the answer for many of our global climate problems today. Getting to Zero ain’t for the faint-hearted

TM R&D recently participated in the Digital HR Tech Day event supporting TM One. The event was held at its Innovation Lab within the TM Digital Academy in Cyberjaya where TM R&D showcased its Generative AI-powered Interactive & Help Agent (AISHA) and an HR portal & application that simplifies employee experience (PEOPLE).



AISHA is a 24/7 generative AI-powered interaction medium providing quick, contextual and personalised responses while PEOPLE simplifies employee experience and empowers the HR department from the tip of the finger.



The event brought together Heads of Human Capital from diverse industries, leaders, and esteemed industry experts for an extensive half a day session dedicated to exchanging insightful knowledge and fostering collaboration.

TM R&D showcases AISHA and PEOPLE at Digital HR Tech Day Event

We’re thrilled to share that TM R&D has signed a Letter of Collaboration with Jabatan Perhutanan Negeri Selangor (JPNS) to embark on a transformative journey towards environmental conservation. The collaboration focuses on the study, analysis, and mitigation of challenges related to forest conservation and rehabilitation for CFS-Selangor.



The LoC was signed after the inaugural Selangor Royal Heritage Forest Declaration Ceremony officiated by His Royal Highness, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah ibni Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, Sultan of Selangor.



In addition, TM R&D participated in the exhibition where we showcased our Smart Integrated Dashboard. The dashboard represents a groundbreaking leap in biodiversity management, capable of integrating various data from key departments under the State of Selangor and the Ministry of Natural Resource, Environment, and Climate Change. We also showcase our varied solutions namely the connected vehicle system, fixed wireless access connectivity and data-driven helmet for workforce safety.

TM R&D Collaborates with Jabatan Perhutanan Negeri Selangor (JPNS)

TM R&D CEO, Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah recently participated at the ASEAN Future Cities Conference 2023 as the keynote speaker and shared insights into how TM R&D is shaping the future of smart cities with technology and innovation. Held at the Berjaya Times Square Hotel Kuala Lumpur, the event was graced by the presence of esteemed guests:

Dr. Sharlene took the audience on a journey from the evolution of mobile connectivity (1G to 5G) to the capabilities of 5G technologies, emphasising the need for smarter connectivity.



While 5G opens numerous possibilities, the challenge of poor signal quality persists. Highlighting solutions like FIRA (Fast Internet for All), Dr. Sharlene emphasised TM R&D’s commitment to efficient connectivity, addressing gaps with innovative problem-solving.



The journey continued with a glimpse into TM R&D’s showcase in Langkawi in the year 2020, where a connected city ecosystem demonstrated how technology enhances safety, efficiency, and customer experience.



As we pave the way for a smarter city in the future, Dr. Sharlene emphasised on:

We recently hosted our flagship event – the TM R&D Tech Mocktail with the theme “Discovering the ‘Secret Sauce’ in the Era of Perpetual Disruption”. TM R&D welcomed Mr. Fabian Bigar, CEO of MyDIGITAL Corporation to our office here in Cyberjaya.



During the courtesy visit, we had the opportunity to present our range of IOT solutions that help businesses and organisations improve process efficiencies and manpower productivity. Some of the key areas that lent to a robust conversation were smart water integrated management system to monitor non-revenue water leakages, optimise repair and replacement of ageing infra; connected vehicle solution that enables fleet and driver productivity as well as ensures vehicle safety and compliance level; workforce management that digitises the workforce by streamlining task distribution and connecting all stakeholders seamlessly on one platform.



We gained insights from Mr. Bigar’s presentation that explained the government’s comprehensive 10-year digitalisation plan especially in addressing MyDIGITAL’s role in setting up initiatives for businesses to expand and thrive locally, regionally and globally. We also talked about the establishment of the Malaysia Centre for the 4IR (Malaysia Centre4IR) that promotes private-public partnership in the areas of energy transition and digital transformation.

MyDIGITAL CEO Visits TM R&D

TM R&D recently participated in a panel session at the World Digital Economy and Technology Summit (WDET) 2023 organised by the <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/company/ksinstitute/">KSI Strategic Institute for Asia Pacific</a>. Titled “The impact of digitalisation on ESG and how digital technology can support sustainability”, the panel of speakers included our CEO Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, Ms. Barbara Meynert, Mr. Shazali Sulaiman, Ms. Arina Kok, Mr. Girish Mavath, Mr. Murugason R. Thangaratnam and Ms. Shikha Kedia Bharadwaj.



Moderated by Adj. Practice Professor Cheah Kok Hoong, Dr Sharlene shared her insights on the role TM R&D plays in shaping digital sustainability. At TM R&D, all our solutions are built primarily to improve efficiency and productivity – basically, reduce waste and improve the effective use of manpower and assets. The smart utilities solution for example, monitors non-revenue water leakages while the workforce management streamlines task distribution and connects all stakeholders seamlessly on one platform.



The topic that resonated with the audience was how TM R&D is supporting the Central Forest Spine (CFS) program, a national-level initiative in collaboration with Jabatan Perhutanan Negeri Selangor (JPNS).  The forests are disconnected due to uncontrolled development, logging, agricultural expansion, deforestation, and overharvesting. Thus, the purpose of CFS is to ‘connect’ all these disconnected forests by building a safe forest corridor, thereby enhancing the connectivity of these diverse jungle ecosystems. Digital technology can play an impactful role in problem-solving some of the key obstacles the agencies face on the ground.



At TM R&D, we believe it is imperative that corporate Malaysia invests in R&D as a catalyst for business growth and profitability as well as contribute to the nation’s high economy ambitions. Research and innovation is not only about the headlines of creating new knowledge but also to deliver consistency in the areas of value creation and making a tangible business impact.

TM R&D CEO @ World Digital Economy & Technology Summit 2023

Cyberview Sdn Bhd recently organised the biggest design challenge in Cyberjaya to help improve the community’s quality of life by making the city more efficient, responsive, sustainable, resilient, healthy, and enjoyable to live in while also enhancing urban social living.



Held in RekaScape, Cyberjaya, InnoJam is a two-day Design Challenge where participants come together in dynamic teams to tackle real-world problems and develop innovative solutions. The challenge provides a platform for participants from all walks of life to brainstorm and design innovative ideas and solutions with the help of seasoned mentors.



TM R&D supported the program by providing its in-house open software development platform named Open Innovation Platform (OIP) for participants to leverage the services and data available through our marketplace using REST Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). TM R&D team also provided mentoring to the participants in terms of utilising OIP and its data for their innovations.



OIP developed by TM R&D, is the 1st Open Software Development Platform in Malaysia. This platform serves as a multi-layer digital infra that provides a complete ecosystem for the creation of new revenue opportunities and is also part of TM One Sandbox Ecosystem. In addition, OIP comprises a data brokerage system, an Application Programming Interface (API) aggregation infrastructure and an end-to-end Internet of Things (IoT) platform for rapid service creation.

TM R&D Supports Cyberview’s InnoJam Design Challenge with OIP

Our CEO, Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah was invited as a guest speaker for the Fireside Chat Session with YB Teo Nie Ching, Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital to discuss the topic of Women Impact in Tech: Trend or Demand.



Joined by other leaders namely Jun Maria Tan Abdullah, Senior Director of Human Capital, PayNet; Izzana Salleh, Co-Founder & Global President of Project Girls 4 Girls and Ivy Kwan, Vice President & Key Account Manager of Ericsson, the Fireside Chat Session was uniquely held while on a journey from Kuala Lumpur to Tanjung Malim via a KTMB chartered train.



Dr. Sharlene shared her invaluable insights and conveyed that yes, women’s impact in tech is significant and a growing demand in the industry but diversity and inclusiveness are also important. Having a balanced gender representation in the tech industry not only promotes equality but also enhances decision-making, fuels innovation, and improves problem-solving.



In TM R&D, 50% of the workforce are women, who also make up some of the key engineers and data scientists.

TM R&D CEO in Fireside Chat Session with YB Teo Nie Ching

In line with our environmental sustainability agenda, TM R&D has collaborated with Jabatan Perhutanan Negeri Selangor (JPNS), which oversees the potential implementation of the Central Forest Spine (CFS) Programme. The CFS Programme is a strategic and comprehensive initiative aimed at conserving and managing the country’s forest ecosystems.



In addition, TM R&D was appointed as the technology partner of the CFS-Selangor Task Force and a workshop was recently held at our office to develop an integrated dashboard for CFS-Selangor agencies. The integrated data collected through this dashboard will facilitate seamless tracking and monitoring of various activities namely wildlife and initiatives status. It also enables the study and analysis of forest conservation as well as rehabilitation within the CFS-Selangor area.



We also had the opportunity to showcase our varied solutions such as connected vehicle system, workforce management, data-driven helmet for workforce safety, smart water integrated management system, fixed wireless access connectivity, and a signal enhancer for remote areas. All aimed at driving smart forest and environment management as well as wildlife monitoring.

TM R&D Tech Mocktails

Telekom Research & Development Sdn Bhd (TM R&D), the innovation arm of Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) wins the “Digital-Utilities” Award for its smart workforce management solution known as FORCE at the recent Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards 2023 (MTEA), organised by the Asian Business Review.



This is the seventh award received by TM R&D from MTEA in the last five years, spotlighting its role in accelerating the use of advanced technology and mobile-first approach to spearhead industrial productivity and operational efficiencies as Malaysia transitions into a digital economy. Through cross learnings from deployment within the TM ecosystem, TM R&D’s advanced analytics software in the FORCE platform measures and reports business performance metrics in real-time. This enables fast-paced businesses to make precise data-driven decisions to improve complex tasks scheduling of large fieldwork teams across geographies that in turn, significantly ease resource planning and operational costs.

TM Bags Top Tech Award for its Digital Workforce Solution

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Collaboration for joint research in the areas of Next Generation Passive Optical Networks to enhance bandwidth experience for users in Malaysia</li><li>TM R&D and ZTE have successfully proved an ultra-wide transmission rate of 50GPON technology.</li></ul>



 Telekom Research & Development Sdn Bhd (TM R&D), the innovation arm of Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ZTE (Malaysia) Corporation Sdn Bhd (ZTE), a global leading provider of information and communication technology solutions, to collaborate on optical network research, bringing the first 50Gbps bandwidth experience to Malaysia.



The MoU was signed by Dr Sharlene Thiagarajah, Chief Executive Officer, TM R&D and Steven Ge, Chief Executive Officer, ZTE Malaysia. Under this agreement, TM R&D and ZTE will jointly explore the capabilities of next-generation. Passive Optical Network (PON) access technology, 50GPON, to support various application scenarios. In addition, both entities will look into use cases that can deliver ultra-broadband access to the government, enterprise and consumers, as well as support the requirements of innovative services such as 5G, Cloud Virtual Reality (VR), industrial intelligent manufacturing for high bandwidth, low latency & jitter, and clock synchronisation, all of which will enhance the user experience in Malaysia.



Commenting on the MoU, Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, Chief Executive Officer, TM R&D said, “TM R&D is committed to conducting research on future technologies and innovating new value-added smarter eco-systems that will improve the quality of user experience, and ultimately bring a positive impact on their lives. Meanwhile, Steven Ge, Chief Executive Officer, ZTE Malaysia shared, “With Gigabit home broadband services widely used in Malaysia at present, and the basic fixed network is in the time window of evolution from GPON to 10G PON, this partnership could not have come at a better time.”

TM R&D recently participated at The Smart Nation Expo 2022, Malaysia’s biggest tech event on Smart Cities, Emerging Technologies and Applications. With the theme “ACCELERATING THE DIGITAL TRANFORMATION” the landmark event signals Malaysia’s next economic leap into the next digital age that will transform the Nation. Officiated by YB Dato Sri Mustapa bin Mohamed, Minister at the Prime Minister’s Department (Economy), the three-day event hosted more than 500 exhibitors from 23 different countries, showcasing more than 1000 latest innovations.



As part of <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/company/tm-0ne/">TM One</a> ‘s booth, we showcased our amazing solutions namely Smart Helmet, FORCE, CONVES and SWIMS. Smart Helmet offers a combination of safety helmet and Internet of Things to provide safety, connectivity and tracking benefits to worksite supervisors. Earlier this week, all of us at TM R&D came together to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri, our first celebration since the start of the pandemic.

TM R&D Celebrates Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2022

Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, CEO of TM R&D recently participated in a webinar on Cybersecurity and Trust – Building Mutual Trust to Enhance Digital Economy. 



Organised by KSI Strategic Institute for Asia Pacific (KSI), the webinar prompted a conversation on the role of cyber security in creating a digital economy by exploring the solutions as well as resources to help set the foundation for a truly secure digital future.

Another milestone for TM R&D as we had the opportunity to showcase one of our innovations, Smart Helmet to the Prime Minister of Malaysia, YAB Dato’ Sri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Minister of Human Resource, YB Datuk Seri M. Saravanan.

TM R&D CEO Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah recently participated in the Simposium Wanita Dalam Pengajian Tinggi 2021 Panel Session entitled Wanita Dalam Akademik Dan Penyelidikan organised by the Ministry of Higher Education, Universiti Sains Malaysia and Department of Women Development (Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development).
The panel session also featured two other renowned speakers and they are YBhg. Prof. Datuk Dr. Asma Ismail FASc. Holder of Kursi Ibnu Sinar, International Islamic University, Malaysia and Dr. Chai Lay Ching, Chair, Young Scientists Network-Academy of Sciences Malaysia.
The one-hour session aims to address issues in empowering women in the higher education sector to adapt to the clash of the disruptive era and the Covid-19 pandemic thus drive the role in achieving sustainable development goals.
Dr. Sharlene shared excellent views on the current landscape of women’s leadership in the industry and its trend as well as her opinion on work and home life balance in today’s context.

The webinar also featured another four (4) speakers and they are Martin Curley, Director Digital Transformation and Open Innovation at Health Service Executive, Saud A. Alsheraihi, General Manager, Business Development at STC, Russel Duncan, Chief Technology Officer at Telstra Health, David Smith, Head of Ecosystems Development at Huawei and Joann O’Brien, Vice President Digital Ecosystems at TM Forum as the moderator.



The webinar aims to explore the role of connectivity and 5G in realising digital transformation in the healthcare industry. Dr. Sharlene shared insightful perspectives on how technology can be leveraged in the journey towards well-being and listed six (6) capabilities or characteristics from a telco point of view on how healthcare ecosystems can be built which includes stitching silos, legacy systems and  the ability to deal with large volumes of data.

TM R&D was honoured to recently have En. Nizam Abd Razak one of its board members, visiting the innovation centre. The visit was organised to share on TM R&D’s role in supporting TM’s value stream and to showcase some of TM R&D’s innovative solutions.
En. Nizam who is also the Co-Founder and Managing Director of Animonsta Studios best known for animated series BoBoiBoy, was warmly welcomed by Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah together with TM R&D’s Management Team. The visit started off with a presentation on TM R&D followed by a product showcase. TM R&D showcased and demonstrated three (3) innovative solutions namely TROIKA, CAMELIA and SPICE.ai, highlighting on its exciting strengths and capabilities.
TM R&D also had the opportunity to bring En. Nizam on a lab tour where he met with some of our researchers who were working on various projects. Impressed and excited with what he had seen coupled with his extensive experience, En. Nizam generously shared his exciting ideas for TM R&D.

TM R&D CEO in ‘Notepad with Ibrahim Sani’ on Astro Awani

TM R&D assists Orbix International School in adhering to the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) with deployment of EWAR towards curbing the spread of COVID-19 virus.



Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), through its innovation arm, TM Research & Development (TM R&D), further promotes the adoption of digital solutions in the education sector by deploying its Early Warning, Alert & Response or “EWAR” at Orbix International School (Orbix), a private school in Muar, Johor. EWAR is an Artificial Intelligence (A.I) driven contactless temperature screening solution internally-developed by TM R&D.



In an effort to digitalise the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) outlined for schools, Orbix has installed EWAR Compact, one (1) of EWAR’s product categories, within their premise to better facilitate the temperature screenings of their students, teachers and visitors towards curbing the spread of COVID-19 virus.



Commenting on the initiative, Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, Chief Executive Officer, TM R&D said, “We are honoured to be working with an educational institution such as Orbix to deploy our cost-effective and innovative solution in response to the required safety protocols. EWAR Compact is an AI-driven, one-on-one contactless thermal screening solution with a high accuracy of +/- 0.3℃, fast (~1sec) detection and voice prompt. In addition, AI-based facial recognition capabilities can also be applied with the solution. With EWAR Compact, students and teachers can go to schools with peace of mind, knowing that their schools are using the most effective technology available to safeguard their health.

Back in July, TM R&D has successfully installed EWAR Compact at 12 selected schools under the purview of Bangsar / Pudu District Education Office (PPDBP) namely Victoria Institution, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Dato’ Lokman, SMK Seri Saujana, SMK Desa Petaling, SMK Cochrane, SMK Taman Maluri, SMK Alam Damai, SMK Bukit Jalil, SMK Dato’ Onn, SMK (P) Bandaraya, SMK Convent Jalan Peel and SMK Seri Permaisuri.



During the early stages of the Movement Control Order (MCO), TM R&D has introduced two (2) main product categories under EWAR, namely EWAR Crowd and EWAR Compact as part of its contribution in the fight against COVID-19. The solution comes with four (4) main capabilities that close the critical loop from detection to containment. It is non-intrusive and has use-cases for both crowd and one-on-one scanning, respectively.



EWAR Crowd comes with a dual-camera (thermal and optical) and is designed to conduct a rapid body temperature screening of approximately 10-15 individuals per second simultaneously at high traffic areas. It can easily be deployed in locations with mass traffic flow such as offices, shopping complexes, transportation hubs, universities, schools, tourist attractions, airports, immigration centres, and hospitals. EWAR Compact on the other hand is more suitable for a one-on-one contactless thermal screening. This can eliminate the need of the hand-held temperature taking, which can subsequently improve social distancing and minimise long queues.



Both EWAR models have been installed at more than 150 sites across several industry verticals and have gone regional to help keep businesses safe beyond Malaysian shores. The solutions have been installed at the quarantine and treatment centre for COVID-19 cases at Malaysia Agro Exposition Park (MAEPS) in Serdang, large and mid-size office lobbies, hotels, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) payment counters, various sales galleries and Gamuda Land construction sites, just to name a few.

How Innovation is building a Digital Nation of Producers (PART 1 of 2)

TM R&D played a part in MYHackathon 2020 by providing its in-house open software development platform named Open Innovation Platform (OIP) to the participants.



MYHackathon 2020 is a nationwide event organised under the National Economic Regeneration Plan (PENJANA) to co-create digital solutions that will help improve the delivery of key public services.



Participants are able to leverage on OIP, Malaysia’s first open software development platform as a Service Exchange Platform to consume and publish their services or data through Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), Data Hosting Platform to host the services on OIP and Service Creation Platform to create smart services by connecting devices.



Shariq Haseeb, Head of Innovation and Portfolio Management, TM R&D delivered a keynote address to explain on OIP, its features and benefits in developing digital solutions.



MYHackathon 2020 will be held over six rounds at different locations across Malaysia each with a specific theme and matching set of problem statements for maximum value.

Why Open Data is essential to transform Malaysia into a dynamic Digital Nation (Part 2 of 2)

Telekom Research & Development Sdn Bhd (TM R&D), cabang inovasi TM berada pada landasan kukuh menyediakan penggunaan jalur lebar berkelajuan tiga hingga lima kali lebih tinggi menerusi penyelesaian inovatif, Fast Internet for Rural Area (FIRA).



Ketua Pegawai Eksekutifnya, Dr Sharlene Thiagarajah berkata, sejajar Pelan Fiberisasi & Kesambungan Nasional (NFCP), pelanggan pra-Unifi dan bakal pelanggan yang berada dalam jarak atau lebih dari lima kilometer (km) dari stesen pangkalan 4G terdekat boleh menikmati jalur lebar tanpa wayar berkelajuan tinggi dengan menggunakan FIRA.



Katanya, FIRA adalah penyelesaian inovatif oleh TM R&D dalam menyediakan penggunaan jalur lebar berkelajuan tinggi yang menjimatkan bagi pengguna yang berada di kawasan luar bandar dan pinggir bandar yang tidak menerima capaian oleh Unifi atau fiber.

FIRA jalur lebar lima kali lebih tinggi

Telekom Research & Development Sdn Bhd (TM R&D) appears to have made major innovative strides in the past two years. Since 2018, the R&D unit of Telekom Malaysia Bhd has managed to achieve a 100% adoption rate for its innovations from a mere 5% previously, says TM R&D CEO Dr Sharlene Thiagarajah.



In fact, the 19-year-old firm has evolved from largely serving the TM group to serving the nation as well, as it delivered a record RM 1.6 billion in innovation impact last year, Sharlene points out, “We started largely by serving the group. But now, we see that a lot what we do can be applied outside the group. So here we are, bringing a lot of these [innovations] to the market. We have at least five ‘killer products’ that have been commercialised in the market today with external revenue and so on.”



TM R&D’s commercialised products include a contactless temperature screening solution called Early Warning, Alert & Response (EWAR), Smart Retails Analytics, Smart Water Management Systems and a data exchange platform for which it was appointed a data technology partner of Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC).



“Everything we create- all the IPs (intellectual properties)- don’t just belong to the company but to the nation. It is my goal, in a way, to transform Malaysia into more of a nation that produces rather than one that just consumes. It is good progress for us to go from R&D to ‘productising’ and commercialising things, and serving the nation, which is the bigger purpose,” Sharlene tells The Edge.



She adds that the R&D unit has generated more than 2,800 IP rights and 1,400 digital assets to date.



Most of these innovations leverage the open data platform that helps produce analytics. This, in turn, allows the firm to establish correlations between the date gathered and the contributing factors, resulting in “new revenue and cost-saving opportunities,” says Sharlene, who is a co-founder and director of a company in the automation and radio-frequency identification (RFID) space.



“For example, you put a thermometer out there and get the temperature of every minute of the day. And then you have a water tap equipped with a sensor that tracks your water consumption. Put the two together and you get a correlation that says, ‘When it is very hot, people drink more water’.



“We could then expect water consumption to go up during the hot season in Malaysia. This would allow water suppliers to ensure that their water reserves are sufficient during such times.”



Last month, TM R&D announced that as a data technology partner of MDEC, the firm would contribute its expertise to accelerate data technology adoption and develop data-driven enterprises, facilitating talent development and industry-academia collaboration. This would be done by sharing related case studies with MDEC to generate interest among business enterprises in adopting data technology.



The platform, which allows data files to be uploaded in various formats, was designed to cater for users  of all levels, from amateurs to advanced. These files will then be converted into application programming interfaces (APIs) and published on the data store.



“This allows anyone who has access to the platform to use the data for further analyses and derive useful insights,” says Sharlene, noting that the platform serves as an avenue for data owners to monetise their data.



Open data is a key focus area under the Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit’s (Mampu) Public Sector Information and Communication Technology Strategic Plan. Under Mampu’s five-year plan, Malaysia aims to be the top 30 of the Open Data Barometer (ODB) by end-2020, from No 53 in 2016. Even so, that objective may not be achieved so soon.



Malaysia is not in the latest top 30 ranking on the barometer produced by the World Wide Web Foundation. Interestingly, its neighbouring countries the Philippines and Indonesia are ranked No 19 and No 21 respectively on the list, which is led by Canada.



ODB is a global measure of how governments are publishing and using open data for accountability, innovation and social impact. Opendata-barometer.org has been publishing the top 30 countries since 2017, after coming out with the full list of rankings from 2013 to 2016.



Sharlene says open data has allowed TM R&D to expedite the process of building software by three to four times, and at reduced cost of between 30% and 70% by leveraging reusable components stored on the platform. “For example, a login page. When you have a software application, there’s a login page with buttons and functions. All these are pretty common. In the past, people would rebuild all these components such as login, authentication and feedback pages [every time they built new software].



“But if I create it once and store it as an API, then every time I build new software, I will just pull all that API[data]. Of course, you will need to standardise the language. That is why we chose an open innovation platform, which basically allows any language.



“There are a lot of technical details-how you store it, how you reduce power consumption when you store data and so on. And all this is really where we bring down the cost creating software.”

EWAR at Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) Annual General Meeting 2020!

EWAR Compact at Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL)!

EWAR, A.I. driven contactless temperature screening solution made in Malaysia has now entered the international market



Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), through its innovation arm, TM Research & Development (TM R&D), is expanding the delivery of its Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) driven contactless temperature screening solution – Early Warning, Alert & Response or “EWAR” – to Maldives. For the expansion, TM R&D is working alongside Dhiraagu, the leading and largest provider of telecommunications and digital services in Maldives, to assist local businesses in resuming full operations while maintaining a safe environment by installing EWAR at their premises. This initiative is set to provide businesses in Maldives and their stakeholders with the confidence for business continuity through the provisioning of the complete solution.



 Commenting on the collaboration, Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, Chief Executive Officer, TM R&D said, “We are excited to collaborate with Dhiraagu to introduce EWAR, a reliable and accurate contactless thermal screening solution to businesses in Maldives. As we are facing an unprecedented period, health procedures to curb the Covid-19 pandemic are universal which is why we believe EWAR serves two main purposes – to provide early warning alerts of high temperature efficiently and to minimise human contacts. We believe other countries can also reap the benefits of EWAR to better face this pandemic. We see this as our first step into showcasing how innovative digital solutions developed by Malaysian talents such as EWAR can assist in the fight against COVID-19 at the global front.”



 “As we are navigating through a new normal, we will continue to introduce smart digital solutions that focus on safety and to help fulfil the digital requirements of businesses.  Harnessing their expertise in digital platforms and digital solutions, TM R&D introduced two (2) main products under EWAR, namely EWAR Crowds and EWAR Compact in April.



 EWAR Crowds is designed to conduct a rapid body temperature screening of approximately 10-15 individuals per second simultaneously at high traffic areas. The solution is non-intrusive and can easily be deployed in locations with mass traffic flow such as offices, shopping complexes, transportation hubs, universities, schools, tourist attractions, airports, immigration centres, and hospitals. EWAR Compact on the other hand is more suitable for one-on-one contactless thermal screening. This helps to eliminate the need for hand-held temperature taking devices which can subsequently minimise long queues and increase efficiency. 



Both EWAR products also come with cloud-based software and real-time monitoring app which makes this innovative solution unique. If any visitor entering the premises records a higher temperature, an alert will be triggered and a notification will be sent to the mobile device of the designated person in charge. The system also allows storing of individual temperature reports over a cloud system where it can be accessed remotely for tracking or analysis.

The EWAR solution has been developed with the highest accuracy for thermal screening.  Currently, EWAR has been deployed at more than 150 sites across several industry verticals to provide accurate, hassle-free screening of employees and visitors. The sites include the quarantine and treatment centre for COVID-19 cases at Malaysia Agro Exposition Park (MAEPS) in Serdang, large and mid-size office lobbies, 12 schools, hotels, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) payment counters, various sales galleries, Gamuda Land construction sites, just to name a few.

TM warmly welcomed YB Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah, the Minister of Communications and Multimedia on his inaugural visit to Menara TM yesterday. YB Dato’ Saifuddin also officially launched the “Bulan Kebangsaan TM” campaign as part of the Company’s celebration for the upcoming National Day.



During the event, YB Dato’ Saifuddin made a video call to Veveonah Mosibin in Kampung Sapatalang, Pitas, Sabah who recently caught the attention of many when she had to sit for her online examinations from a tree top to get access to the internet.

TM R&D CEO, Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah received a certificate of appreciation from the Minister of Communications and Multimedia, YB Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah for TM R&D’s contribution during the COVID-19 pandemic at TM’s National Month Campaign Launching Ceremony held at Menara TM yesterday.
To curb the spread of COVID-19, TM R&D developed the Early Warning, Alert and Response (EWAR), an “All-in-One” contactless thermal screening solution that detects high body temperature in crowded places or one on one. TM R&D has also developed a contact tracing app and launched a Data Exchange Platform in collaboration with MDEC to bolster research efforts in combating the COVID-19 pandemic.
