As part of our Big Idea Lecture Series, we were honoured to host Prof. Dr. Ir. @ZainalAripinZakariah, former GM of Research at TM R&D, who shared the story of how he helped transform Telekom R&D from the ground up.
In 1993, the unit was small, the resources limited and the path uncertain. But instead of waiting for perfect conditions, he made the decision to move forward, to jump-start research efforts by building partnerships, activating talent and driving progress one step at a time.
His talk reminded us that progress starts with action. That being resourceful, bold and connected to purpose can spark growth even in challenging times.
As we move forward, we carry this mindset with us. Because to shape the future, we must be willing to start, even when the way isn’t clear yet.

We recently visited the TM One Innovation Lab to see how our innovations are being translated into real-world solutions. It was an opportunity for our researchers to connect directly with the business, gain a deeper understanding of real-world challenges and witness how our solutions are already making a meaningful impact.
It was exciting to see TM R&D solutions such as FORCE and CONVES being showcased by <a class="EaWzLdfjwgloMRCqeXHrsnLLcqdpxKtzA " href="https://www.linkedin.com/company/tm-0ne/" target="_self" data-test-app-aware-link="">TM One</a> to help clients digitalise and future-proof their operations. We also explored several impactful technologies namely Smart Predictive Maintenance and Geospatial Tourism Solutions, all aligned with the broader vision of Smart City Innovations.
This visit wasn’t just about ideas. It was about bringing together people, expertise and purpose. We’re driven to explore what’s next, from Generative AI to digital platforms and to turn those ideas into real-world impact.

Innovating with Purpose: Driving Digital and Smart City Solutions Together

TM R&D was honoured to showcase our in-house metaverse education solution to YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the recent Temu Anwar @ MMU Programme and the launch of the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence & Engineering (FAIE).
The solution demonstrates how education can move beyond traditional boundaries into an immersive 3D environment. This enables students and communities to learn, collaborate, and create in new and impactful ways. More than a technology showcase, it reflects TM R&D’s commitment to reimagining education by nurturing talent, unlocking creativity, uplifting learning experiences and enabling access for everyone, everywhere.
We thank YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, Chief Secretary to the Government for visiting our booth and showing interest in our metaverse education solution showcase.

Driving Malaysia’s Digital Future with Metaverse Learning

TM R&D recently joined 𝗖𝗗𝗢 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗩𝗘𝗫 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱, the Public Sector Chief Digital Officers Conference, which brought together over 500 digital leaders from ministries and agencies. Themed “Agile and Intelligent Digital Leaders of a New Era,” the event focused on shaping the next phase of Malaysia’s digital transformation.
Together with Credence, we showcased two of our public sector-focused solutions: 
🔹 eHEALTH Digital Screening – supports early detection and proactive health monitoring 
🔹 Smart Urban Forestry Platform – uses AI to help manage and protect urban green spaces

Glam Lip Lap Raya: A Celebration of Togetherness at TM R&D

Exploring the Future of Quantum-Safe Networks at TM R&D’s Big Idea Lecture Series

New team members from TM R&D recently had the opportunity to visit TM’s Network Intelligence Centre (NIC), gaining first-hand exposure to cutting-edge network operations. The session was designed with the objective to enhance their understanding of network operations, covering real-time monitoring and intelligent network management. Our visit began with a briefing on NIC’s network operations, followed by a view of live network analytics in action and ended with a Fibre Showcase. The recent launch of the National AI Office (NAIO) by Prime Minister, YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim marked a significant milestone for Malaysia, aiming to position the country as a regional leader in AI development. We recently had the privilege of hosting delegates from 𝘗𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘴 𝘋𝘪𝘳𝘢𝘫𝘢 𝘔𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘺𝘴𝘪𝘢 (PDRM) at our office. This visit was part of an initiative to showcase TM R&D’s latest innovations. The event focused on promoting breakthrough solutions that enhance safety and health standards across industries. Safeguarding the Future of Work: TM R&D Showcases Smart Helmet and E-PTW

The topic of environmental sustainability has always been close to our hearts. At the recent ‘Digital Technology for Climate Governance’ event, hosted by Multimedia University in conjunction with the National Climate Governance Summit 2024, we were truly inspired. TM R&D CEO, Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, was invited to participate in a panel discussion on ‘Harnessing Digital Technology for Climate Action.’ The session provided valuable insights into the intersection of digital technology and climate governance as well as exploring practical applications and future directions for leveraging innovation to drive sustainable environmental practices. During the session, Dr. Sharlene outlined three key pillars of climate governance: 𝗠𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, which focuses on managing the immediate risks of climate change; 𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, aimed at building resilience within the economy and ensuring self-sufficiency knowing that the climate risk is coming; and 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, which emphasises adopting solutions in a way that does not negatively impact businesses or the economy. Dr. Sharlene also highlighted the critical role of digital technology in advancing these pillars, using TM R&D’s Smart Water Integrated Management System (SWIMS) as an example. SWIMS is a homegrown solution that provides real-time monitoring and data analysis of water resources, helps manage water consumption, detects water leakages and optimises water distribution. At the event, we also showcased two of our innovative solutions: – 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗗𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗯𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱 – enabling data-driven decision-making for forestry management. – 𝗔𝗜 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗧𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 – empowering more efficient and accurate carbon footprint tracking. TM R&D receives certification from MOSTI for Innovative Tech Solutions

TM R&D hosted two exciting events with distinct objectives this week!. First, we conducted a comprehensive three-day workshop with 𝐽𝑎𝑏𝑎𝑡𝑎𝑛 𝐼𝑚𝑖𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑒𝑛 𝑀𝑎𝑙𝑎𝑦𝑠𝑖𝑎 (JIM), sharing our journey in R&D and innovation. This workshop marked a significant milestone for JIM as they took steps toward establishing their own R&D and Innovation Unit. Next, we had the pleasure of welcoming a delegation from Sumitomo Corporation, Japan. TM R&D & MMU establish strategic partnership with Omantel

Transformative technologies are revolutionising our everyday lives. More and more global companies are slowly but surely gravitating their way for collaboration and building hubs as the Malaysian government continues accelerating investments into the AI infrastructure. In line with this, we hosted our flagship event, the TM R&D Tech Mocktail, with the theme “Transformative opportunities with AI everywhere.” This fifth cycle of the series, where brilliant minds met, featured discussions on various AI topics including finding the balance between adopting technology to achieve efficiency, productivity, and exponential growth. The event was led by Dato’ Zainal Abidin Putih, Chairman of TM, and Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazliham Mohd Su’ud, President & Chief Executive Officer of MMU / Chairman of TM R&D. We were also honoured to welcome Dato’ Sri Idris Jala, Chairman of PEMANDU Associates, who captivated the audience with an insightful keynote on transformative leadership in a digital world. His address highlighted that to drive the AI ecosystem in Malaysia, leaders should focus on pursuing “the Game of Impossible” by setting ambitious goals that challenge the status quo. He also encouraged collaboration by fostering partnerships between the government, industry, and academia to share knowledge and resources. Last but not least, he emphasised enforcing a discipline of action, so that plans are followed through with clear milestones. TM R&D Tech Mocktail 2024

TM R&D welcomes YBhg. Dato’ Ts. Dr. Hj. Aminuddin Hashim, Secretary General of the Ministry of Science, Technology & Innovation (MOSTI) and delegates to our office here in Cyberjaya. During the visit, our CEO, Dr. Sharlene briefed on TM R&D and we showcased our labs, along with various innovative solutions. These include the Smart Forest Dashboard, designed to facilitate seamless tracking and monitoring of diverse forest activities. Next, we presented our Intelligent Connectivity Solutions, namely FIRA and SIERA which provide fast connectivity solutions in rural, suburban, and infra-blind spots. YBhg. Dato was impressed with FIRA and expressed his keen interest. Additionally, we introduced the SCARLET solution for off-grid power issues and backup power alternatives. Thank you to YBhg. TM R&D Showcases Cutting-Edge Innovations to MOSTI Secretary General During Cyberjaya Visit

The latest stocktake of global corporate net-zero objectives reveals a concerning trend – while over one-third of the world’s largest publicly traded companies have committed to some form of net-zero target, a staggering 65% are failing to meet even the most basic reporting protocols.
This glaring gap between intention and action poses a significant threat to our collective goal of achieving a climate-safe future. Bridging this gap demands a step away from the status quo of “business as usual” thinking, which drives the twin crises of climate change and biodiversity loss that we currently face.
Recently, Professor Donald Lessard from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) popped over to TM R&D to give an open and fresh take on what he terms as “critical sustainability imperatives”. We delved deep into the urgent need for radical changes in business models, technology and policy, recognising that addressing these challenges demands a multifaceted approach from corporate players to government law makers.
In our pursuit of decarbonisation, we must ensure that our transformational efforts strike a balance between corporate profitability and sustainability goals. Our transformation plans should demonstrate how we’ve weighed factors such as local environmental impact, risk and reward analysis, and government policies to incentivise and support our initiatives.

Bridging the Gap: Transforming Corporate Net-Zero Commitments into Tangible Actions

Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, CEO of TM R&D, was recently invited to participate in a panel session as part of Maybank’s IWD programme. The session, themed ‘Inspiring Inclusion & The Courage to Challenge’, featured Dr. Sharlene and other esteemed leaders namely Datuk (Dr) Nora Abd Manaf, Maybank Group Chief Human Capital Officer, Dr. Sanjay Sarma, CEO, President & Dean of Asia School of Business and Dato’ Fadza Anuar, Co-Founder of FashionValet.

The exclusive event featured a fireside chat with Dr. Sharlene, where she engaged in a dynamic conversation with the audience about the importance of diversity and how it can ignite positive change both in society and within the workplace.

Dr. Sharlene was invited as a panelist for the Core Leadership (ENERGY LEADER) Forum with the title 𝑀𝑒𝑚𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑘𝑎𝑠𝑎 𝑊𝑎𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑎 𝐷𝑎𝑙𝑎𝑚 𝑆𝑒𝑘𝑡𝑜𝑟 𝑇𝑒𝑛𝑎𝑔𝑎 – 𝑀𝑒𝑛𝑢𝑗𝑢 𝐾𝑒 𝐴𝑟𝑎ℎ 𝑀𝑎𝑠𝑎 𝐷𝑒𝑝𝑎𝑛 𝑌𝑎𝑛𝑔 𝑀𝑎𝑚𝑝𝑎𝑛.
The panel session brought together some of the brightest minds namely Dr Amani Salim, an Inventor, Engineer-Scientist and nanoSkunkWorkX CTO & Co-Founder and Ms Lee Pui Yong, Chief Sustainability Officer of TNB to discuss on women empowerment towards a sustainable future.
In the session, Dr. Sharlene reflected on her career journey, highlighting significant moments from her early days to her current role as CEO of TM R&D. She shared that transitioning from R&D to corporate was a challenging moment, but with the guidance of a great mentor, she successfully navigated and overcame the obstacles shaping her into who she is today. In addition, Dr. Sharlene shared insights on how women leaders can foster collaborative partnerships by effectively communicating and connecting with others.

TM R&D Showcases Cutting-Edge Solutions at TM One’s 5G Labs Event

In conjunction with the ‘Majlis Amanat Tahun Baharu 2024’ with YB Tuan Chang Lih Kang, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), TM R&D was invited to participate in its showcase. Held at the ‘Dewan Tun Canselor’ MMU Cyberjaya, TM R&D had the opportunity to present two of our innovative solutions to YB Tuan Chang Lih Kang – our smart forestry dashboard to facilitate seamless tracking and monitoring of various forest activities as well as the data-driven smart helmet to ensure workforce’s ultimate safety.



Some of the ‘Majlis Amanat Tahun Baharu 2024’ highlights include – MOSTI will focus on several priority areas namely Hydrogen, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Biotechnology – Food Security & Precision Medicine, Startups Ecosystem and Space Technology. On AI, MOSTI will continue to lead efforts to make AI more accessible by ensuring the development of ethical technology through AI Ethics Guidelines that will be launched in the first quarter of this year.

Innovating for the Future: TM R&D Showcases Solutions at MOSTI’s ‘Majlis Amanat Tahun Baharu 2024’

Imagine this, in 2023, some countries experienced the hottest ever temperatures in history. This has been a huge wake-up call to many to start putting in efforts to combat climate change before there is nothing left to fight for. Here at TM R&D, we were fortunate to have Prof. John E. Fernández from the renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) shed some light on how climate change has turned the world on its axis and also, answered the possibilities of whether we can achieve this race by 2050. The short answer to that is yes, thankfully, we are a sticky species and won’t go extinct. But, as he says, there is an enormous increase in greenhouse gas emissions particularly from emerging economies catching up on development. Yes, more efforts must be made from these markets but also much is expected from wealthy countries to weigh in and shoulder greater responsibilities. Prof Fernández explained what are the tipping points we should be aware of, and how research and development can play a pivotal role in combatting different factors in this critical journey. Areas like AI, energy, materials and technology fall under a broad spectrum but have vast potential to be the answer for many of our global climate problems today. TM R&D recently participated in the Digital HR Tech Day event supporting TM One. The event was held at its Innovation Lab within the TM Digital Academy in Cyberjaya where TM R&D showcased its Generative AI-powered Interactive & Help Agent (AISHA) and an HR portal & application that simplifies employee experience (PEOPLE).



AISHA is a 24/7 generative AI-powered interaction medium providing quick, contextual and personalised responses while PEOPLE simplifies employee experience and empowers the HR department from the tip of the finger.

TM R&D showcases AISHA and PEOPLE at Digital HR Tech Day Event

We’re thrilled to share that TM R&D has signed a Letter of Collaboration with Jabatan Perhutanan Negeri Selangor (JPNS) to embark on a transformative journey towards environmental conservation. The collaboration focuses on the study, analysis, and mitigation of challenges related to forest conservation and rehabilitation for CFS-Selangor.



The LoC was signed after the inaugural Selangor Royal Heritage Forest Declaration Ceremony officiated by His Royal Highness, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah ibni Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, Sultan of Selangor.



In addition, TM R&D participated in the exhibition where we showcased our Smart Integrated Dashboard. The dashboard represents a groundbreaking leap in biodiversity management, capable of integrating various data from key departments under the State of Selangor and the Ministry of Natural Resource, Environment, and Climate Change. We also showcase our varied solutions namely the connected vehicle system, fixed wireless access connectivity and data-driven helmet for workforce safety.

TM R&D CEO, Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah recently participated at the ASEAN Future Cities Conference 2023 as the keynote speaker and shared insights into how TM R&D is shaping the future of smart cities with technology and innovation. Held at the Berjaya Times Square Hotel Kuala Lumpur, the event was graced by the presence of esteemed guests:

The journey continued with a glimpse into TM R&D’s showcase in Langkawi in the year 2020, where a connected city ecosystem demonstrated how technology enhances safety, efficiency, and customer experience.

Some of the key areas that lent to a robust conversation were smart water integrated management system to monitor non-revenue water leakages, optimise repair and replacement of ageing infra; connected vehicle solution that enables fleet and driver productivity as well as ensures vehicle safety and compliance level; workforce management that digitises the workforce by streamlining task distribution and connecting all stakeholders seamlessly on one platform.



We gained insights from Mr. Bigar’s presentation that explained the government’s comprehensive 10-year digitalisation plan especially in addressing MyDIGITAL’s role in setting up initiatives for businesses to expand and thrive locally, regionally and globally. MyDIGITAL CEO Visits TM R&D

TM R&D recently participated in a panel session at the World Digital Economy and Technology Summit (WDET) 2023 organised by the <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/company/ksinstitute/">KSI Strategic Institute for Asia Pacific</a>. Titled “The impact of digitalisation on ESG and how digital technology can support sustainability”, the panel of speakers included our CEO Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, Ms. Barbara Meynert, Mr. Shazali Sulaiman, Ms. Arina Kok, Mr. Girish Mavath, Mr. Murugason R. Thangaratnam and Ms. Shikha Kedia Bharadwaj.



Moderated by Adj. Practice Professor Cheah Kok Hoong, Dr Sharlene shared her insights on the role TM R&D plays in shaping digital sustainability. At TM R&D, all our solutions are built primarily to improve efficiency and productivity – basically, reduce waste and improve the effective use of manpower and assets. The smart utilities solution for example, monitors non-revenue water leakages while the workforce management streamlines task distribution and connects all stakeholders seamlessly on one platform.



The topic that resonated with the audience was how TM R&D is supporting the Central Forest Spine (CFS) program, a national-level initiative in collaboration with Jabatan Perhutanan Negeri Selangor (JPNS).  The forests are disconnected due to uncontrolled development, logging, agricultural expansion, deforestation, and overharvesting. Thus, the purpose of CFS is to ‘connect’ all these disconnected forests by building a safe forest corridor, thereby enhancing the connectivity of these diverse jungle ecosystems. Digital technology can play an impactful role in problem-solving some of the key obstacles the agencies face on the ground.

TM R&D CEO @ World Digital Economy & Technology Summit 2023

Cyberview Sdn Bhd recently organised the biggest design challenge in Cyberjaya to help improve the community’s quality of life by making the city more efficient, responsive, sustainable, resilient, healthy, and enjoyable to live in while also enhancing urban social living.



Held in RekaScape, Cyberjaya, InnoJam is a two-day Design Challenge where participants come together in dynamic teams to tackle real-world problems and develop innovative solutions. The challenge provides a platform for participants from all walks of life to brainstorm and design innovative ideas and solutions with the help of seasoned mentors.



TM R&D supported the program by providing its in-house open software development platform named Open Innovation Platform (OIP) for participants to leverage the services and data available through our marketplace using REST Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). TM R&D team also provided mentoring to the participants in terms of utilising OIP and its data for their innovations.



OIP developed by TM R&D, is the 1st Open Software Development Platform in Malaysia. This platform serves as a multi-layer digital infra that provides a complete ecosystem for the creation of new revenue opportunities and is also part of TM One Sandbox Ecosystem. In addition, OIP comprises a data brokerage system, an Application Programming Interface (API) aggregation infrastructure and an end-to-end Internet of Things (IoT) platform for rapid service creation.

TM R&D Supports Cyberview’s InnoJam Design Challenge with OIP

Our CEO, Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah was invited as a guest speaker for the Fireside Chat Session with YB Teo Nie Ching, Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital to discuss the topic of Women Impact in Tech: Trend or Demand.



Joined by other leaders namely Jun Maria Tan Abdullah, Senior Director of Human Capital, PayNet; Izzana Salleh, Co-Founder & Global President of Project Girls 4 Girls and Ivy Kwan, Vice President & Key Account Manager of Ericsson, the Fireside Chat Session was uniquely held while on a journey from Kuala Lumpur to Tanjung Malim via a KTMB chartered train.



Dr. Sharlene shared her invaluable insights and conveyed that yes, women’s impact in tech is significant and a growing demand in the industry but diversity and inclusiveness are also important. Having a balanced gender representation in the tech industry not only promotes equality but also enhances decision-making, fuels innovation, and improves problem-solving.



In TM R&D, 50% of the workforce are women, who also make up some of the key engineers and data scientists.

TM R&D CEO in Fireside Chat Session with YB Teo Nie Ching

In line with our environmental sustainability agenda, TM R&D has collaborated with Jabatan Perhutanan Negeri Selangor (JPNS), which oversees the potential implementation of the Central Forest Spine (CFS) Programme. The CFS Programme is a strategic and comprehensive initiative aimed at conserving and managing the country’s forest ecosystems.



In addition, TM R&D was appointed as the technology partner of the CFS-Selangor Task Force and a workshop was recently held at our office to develop an integrated dashboard for CFS-Selangor agencies. The integrated data collected through this dashboard will facilitate seamless tracking and monitoring of various activities namely wildlife and initiatives status. It also enables the study and analysis of forest conservation as well as rehabilitation within the CFS-Selangor area.



We also had the opportunity to showcase our varied solutions such as connected vehicle system, workforce management, data-driven helmet for workforce safety, smart water integrated management system, fixed wireless access connectivity, and a signal enhancer for remote areas. All aimed at driving smart forest and environment management as well as wildlife monitoring.

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Collaboration for joint research in the areas of Next Generation Passive Optical Networks to enhance bandwidth experience for users in Malaysia</li><li>TM R&D and ZTE have successfully proved an ultra-wide transmission rate of 50GPON technology.</li></ul>



 Telekom Research & Development Sdn Bhd (TM R&D), the innovation arm of Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ZTE (Malaysia) Corporation Sdn Bhd (ZTE), a global leading provider of information and communication technology solutions, to collaborate on optical network research, bringing the first 50Gbps bandwidth experience to Malaysia.



The MoU was signed by Dr Sharlene Thiagarajah, Chief Executive Officer, TM R&D and Steven Ge, Chief Executive Officer, ZTE Malaysia. Under this agreement, TM R&D and ZTE will jointly explore the capabilities of next-generation. Passive Optical Network (PON) access technology, 50GPON, to support various application scenarios. In addition, both entities will look into use cases that can deliver ultra-broadband access to the government, enterprise and consumers, as well as support the requirements of innovative services such as 5G, Cloud Virtual Reality (VR), industrial intelligent manufacturing for high bandwidth, low latency & jitter, and clock synchronisation, all of which will enhance the user experience in Malaysia.



Commenting on the MoU, Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, Chief Executive Officer, TM R&D said, “TM R&D is committed to conducting research on future technologies and innovating new value-added smarter eco-systems that will improve the quality of user experience, and ultimately bring a positive impact on their lives. His Excellency Ambassador of Palestine and His Excellency Ambassador of Algeria Visits TM R&D

Telekom Research & Development Sdn Bhd (TM R&D), the innovation arm of Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), recently won the Innovative Tech Companies of the Year Award at the Asia Corporate Excellence and Sustainability Awards (ACES) 2022, organised by MORS Group. The award was conferred to TM R&D in recognition of its transformative approach to software and technology, demonstrating that its tech innovations can lead to the creation of new approaches and prospects in the world.



Present to accept the award from Mr Luis Nieto, ACES Awards Jury and Ms Shanggari B., MORS Group CEO was Dr Sharlene Thiagarajah, Chief Executive Officer of TM R&D.

For a twist, we conducted “Ask the Doctor” session where our guests can get direct consultation on their digital transformation journey from our experts.

TM R&D recently participated at The Smart Nation Expo 2022, Malaysia’s biggest tech event on Smart Cities, Emerging Technologies and Applications. With the theme “ACCELERATING THE DIGITAL TRANFORMATION” the landmark event signals Malaysia’s next economic leap into the next digital age that will transform the Nation. Officiated by YB Dato Sri Mustapa bin Mohamed, Minister at the Prime Minister’s Department (Economy), the three-day event hosted more than 500 exhibitors from 23 different countries, showcasing more than 1000 latest innovations.



As part of <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/company/tm-0ne/">TM One</a> ‘s booth, we showcased our amazing solutions namely Smart Helmet, FORCE, CONVES and SWIMS. Smart Helmet offers a combination of safety helmet and Internet of Things to provide safety, connectivity and tracking benefits to worksite supervisors. FORCE on the other hand is the solution to digitise your workforce through paperless task distribution and seamlessly connects customers, agents, dispatchers and service technicians. Another milestone for TM R&D as we had the opportunity to showcase one of our innovations, Smart Helmet to the Prime Minister of Malaysia, YAB Dato’ Sri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Minister of Human Resource, YB Datuk Seri M. Saravanan.



To highlight the benefits of this innovation, our CEO Dr Sharlene Thiagarajah and Head Business Development En Azhar Md Yusof briefly demonstrated the capabilities of the Smart Helmet to both VVIPs and their delegates who visited our booth as part of TM exhibitors yesterday during the official launch of HRD Corp Brand and Single Window Platform at KLCC Convention Centre.

TM R&D Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah recently participated in the GIO Webinar organised by TM Forum entitled The 5G Healthcare Ecosystem Opportunity.



The webinar also featured another four (4) speakers and they are Martin Curley, Director Digital Transformation and Open Innovation at Health Service Executive, Saud A. Alsheraihi, General Manager, Business Development at STC, Russel Duncan, Chief Technology Officer at Telstra Health, David Smith, Head of Ecosystems Development at Huawei and Joann O’Brien, Vice President Digital Ecosystems at TM Forum as the moderator.



The webinar aims to explore the role of connectivity and 5G in realising digital transformation in the healthcare industry. Dr. Sharlene shared insightful perspectives on how technology can be leveraged in the journey towards well-being and listed six (6) capabilities or characteristics from a telco point of view on how healthcare ecosystems can be built which includes stitching silos, legacy systems and  the ability to deal with large volumes of data.

TM R&D was honoured to recently have En. Nizam Abd Razak one of its board members, visiting the innovation centre. The visit was organised to share on TM R&D’s role in supporting TM’s value stream and to showcase some of TM R&D’s innovative solutions.
En. Nizam who is also the Co-Founder and Managing Director of Animonsta Studios best known for animated series BoBoiBoy, was warmly welcomed by Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah together with TM R&D’s Management Team. The visit started off with a presentation on TM R&D followed by a product showcase. TM R&D showcased and demonstrated three (3) innovative solutions namely TROIKA, CAMELIA and SPICE.ai, highlighting on its exciting strengths and capabilities.
TM R&D also had the opportunity to bring En. Nizam on a lab tour where he met with some of our researchers who were working on various projects. Impressed and excited with what he had seen coupled with his extensive experience, En. Nizam generously shared his exciting ideas for TM R&D.

Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, CEO of TM R&D recently participated in the Total Telecom Congress 2020 Panel Session with the title Harnessing the Power of AI in your IoT Offering.
In the session, Dr. Sharlene highlighted two (2) examples of how TM R&D has used Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning to create value for its customers. The solutions are Smart Water Integrated Management System (SWIMS) and Network Diagnostic & Expert Advisory System for Service Desk (IDEAS+). Dr. Sharlene also spoke about democratising AI by leveraging on the Open Innovation Platform (OIP).

TM R&D in Business Foresight Forum (BFF) 2020

TM R&D played a part in MYHackathon 2020 by providing its in-house open software development platform named Open Innovation Platform (OIP) to the participants.



MYHackathon 2020 is a nationwide event organised under the National Economic Regeneration Plan (PENJANA) to co-create digital solutions that will help improve the delivery of key public services.



Participants are able to leverage on OIP, Malaysia’s first open software development platform as a Service Exchange Platform to consume and publish their services or data through Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), Data Hosting Platform to host the services on OIP and Service Creation Platform to create smart services by connecting devices.



Shariq Haseeb, Head of Innovation and Portfolio Management, TM R&D delivered a keynote address to explain on OIP, its features and benefits in developing digital solutions.



MYHackathon 2020 will be held over six rounds at different locations across Malaysia each with a specific theme and matching set of problem statements for maximum value.

EWAR Compact at Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL)!

TM warmly welcomed YB Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah, the Minister of Communications and Multimedia on his inaugural visit to Menara TM yesterday. YB Dato’ Saifuddin also officially launched the “Bulan Kebangsaan TM” campaign as part of the Company’s celebration for the upcoming National Day.



During the event, YB Dato’ Saifuddin made a video call to Veveonah Mosibin in Kampung Sapatalang, Pitas, Sabah who recently caught the attention of many when she had to sit for her online examinations from a tree top to get access to the internet.



The video call was made possible with Fast Internet for Rural Area (FIRA), an innovative solution developed by TM R&D in collaboration with webe Digital Sdn Bhd, TM’s mobility arm. FIRA allows fast and cost effective deployment of high speed broadband for users in the rural and sub-urban areas who are currently unable to be served by fibre network connection.

TM R&D CEO, Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah received a certificate of appreciation from the Minister of Communications and Multimedia, YB Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah for TM R&D’s contribution during the COVID-19 pandemic at TM’s National Month Campaign Launching Ceremony held at Menara TM yesterday.
To curb the spread of COVID-19, TM R&D developed the Early Warning, Alert and Response (EWAR), an “All-in-One” contactless thermal screening solution that detects high body temperature in crowded places or one on one. TM R&D has also developed a contact tracing app and launched a Data Exchange Platform in collaboration with MDEC to bolster research efforts in combating the COVID-19 pandemic.

TM R&D recently participated in an international webinar with a very interesting topic.



Organised by the ITERA International Office, the session discussed about the opportunities and challenges faced by the International Cooperation for Sumatra Solutions through Optical Fiber Technology and Data Science towards Smart Cities and New Economic Growth.

During the visit YB Tuan Mohd Shahar and delegates were briefed on TM’s business operations as well as the Company’s latest updates and exchanging ideas about the telecommunications industry in Malaysia. YB Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah, Minister of Communications & Multimedia Malaysia and delegates recently visited the Klang Valley Core Data Center (KVDC) and TM Network Operations Center (TM NOC) here in Cyberjaya.



Among the delegates present during this inaugural visit include Dato’ Suriani Dato’ Ahmad, Secretary General, Ministry of Communications and Multimedia and Dr. Fadhlullah Suhaimi Abdul Malek, Chairman of Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) as well as Dato’ Mohd Ali Hanafiah Mohd Yunus, Chief Corporate Officer, MCMC. The delegation was warmly welcomed by Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Mohd Bakke Salleh, Chairman of TM, Dato’ Noor Kamarul Anuar Nuruddin, Group Chief Executive Officer, TM as well as TM senior management.



During the visit, TM R&D had the opportunity to showcase EWAR, our contactless temperature screening solution to YB Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah. TM R&D CEO Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah explained and demonstrated the capabilities and benefits of EWAR which is one of the key digital initiatives in combating the spread of COVID-19.

Mr. Gerard Lim of MCMC Visits 5G  Use Cases at Langkawi

At TM R&D, we’re committed in supporting TM on this exciting 5G Demonstration Project (5GDP) journey, as part of MCMC’s National Fibersation & Connectivity Plan (NFCP).



Various use cases such as Smart Retail Analytics, Smart Vehicle, Smart Safety Helmet and Smart Water System are now being tested in both Subang Jaya and Langkawi.

TM RND supports TM in Malaysia’s  5G Demonstration Project (5GDP)!

Developed in-house, Open Innovation Platform (OIP) is TM R&D’s open software development platform that has enabled us to develop and deploy solutions four time’s faster than before. Started off as a project, OIP is now ready to be used as the digital development platform for all developers and digital enthusiasts. As part of our initiative to create awareness and promote the platform, an OIP roadshow at University Malaysia Pahang was organised. The half a day session was held at the Seminar Hall, Faculty of Electronic and Computer Engineering with participation of approximately 50 students.

TM R&D participated in TM Forum’s Digital Transformation Asia from 12-14 Nov 2019 held at Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur where five (5) innovative products namely Open Innovation Platform (OIP), Smart Water Integrated Management System (SWIMS), Smart Vehicle (CONVES), Smart Retail Analytics (ACE) and Smart Safety Helmet were showcased. 



TM R&D CEO Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah participated in two exciting activities; a panel session entitled Stargazing 5G – where the panelists discuss on predicting what will happen with 5G in the next few years and a one on one interview with Joann O’ Brien – VP, Ecosystems & Labs entitled Jumpstarting Innovation in Your Organisation where Dr Sharlene passionately articulate her thoughts on TM R&D’s successful transformation from a traditional R&D company to an organisation that focuses on innovation and value creation.

Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, CEO of TM R&D recently participated in a webinar on Cybersecurity and Trust – Building Mutual Trust to Enhance Digital Economy. 



Organised by KSI Strategic Institute for Asia Pacific (KSI), the webinar prompted a conversation on the role of cyber security in creating a digital economy by exploring the solutions as well as resources to help set the foundation for a truly secure digital future. 



During the two-hour session, Dr Sharlene shared her insights on how technology, business models, mindset and ecology will shape a new value-based digital economy that is robust and inclusive.
