TM R&D CEO Dr Sharlene Thiagarajah participated in the launch of MiGHT’s Futures According to Women report, officiated by YABhg Dato’ Seri Dr Wan Azizah Dr Wan Ismail and YB Dato’ Sri Hajah Nancy Shukri.
The publication brings together women from diverse fields and captures their perspectives on the challenges and opportunities shaping Malaysia’s future. Dr Sharlene was among the women invited to contribute to the report, under the Women in Science and Technology chapter.
She also joined the panel session, “From Voices to Value: How Women’s Futures Thinking Strengthens National Decision-Making,” alongside Puan Zainariah Johari, Director of Impacq Capital and Prof Madya Dr Nasrudin Subhi, Associate Professor at the Centre for Research in Psychology and Human Well-Being, UKM.
During the session, Dr Sharlene shared her thoughts on AI, research, innovation and the role of women in shaping future industries. She emphasised that intelligence is gender-neutral and that women should have the right opportunities and support to contribute, lead and shape the future.
The event brought together leaders and accomplished women from different sectors, creating a valuable platform for the exchange of ideas and perspectives on building a more inclusive future.

TM R&D recently hosted its Tech Mocktail 2026, an annual platform that brings together clients, partners and technology experts for innovation sharing, networking and meaningful conversations.
This year’s session focused on how digital solutions can strengthen emergency response and support smarter, safer and more connected operations.
The event featured a sharing session by Assistant Fire Commissioner Ts. Zulfahmi Sutaji from Jabatan Bomba dan Penyelamat Malaysia, who shared valuable insights on digital innovation in emergency response. He later joined a panel session with En. Anuar Mat Alim from TM One and En. Wan Razli Wan Abdullah from TM R&D, where they exchanged perspectives on how technology can improve critical operations, especially when every second counts..
Through our collaboration with BOMBA on C4iFRDM and AVLS, also known as CONVES (fleet management system), we continue to support real operational needs on the ground and contribute towards smarter, safer and more connected emergency response operations.
The session was made even more engaging through interactive discussions, lively conversations and a special BOMBA truck appearance, giving guests a closer look at how innovation can be applied in real-world emergency response.

As technology becomes more connected, cybersecurity is becoming more important for everyone. We were honoured to host Dr Fatima Hussain, Principal SaaS Security Architect at the Royal Bank of Canada, for our recent Big Idea Lecture Series.
Her talk, “Emerging Cybersecurity Threats and Current State-of-the-Art”, shared valuable insights on today’s cybersecurity threats, enterprise solutions, Generative AI, Agentic AI, insider threats and Explainable AI.
A key takeaway from the session was that cybersecurity awareness should not stop us from using technology. Instead, it reminds us to be more careful and responsible.
As Dr Fatima shared, “Innovation is good, staying connected is good, but at the same time, you are increasing the threats for yourself.”
At TM R&D, we continue to learn from industry experts as we strengthen our role in driving responsible and secure innovation.

We recently had the opportunity to visit TM Klang Valley Data Centre (KVDC) as part of our industry exposure programme, gaining first-hand insight into data centre operations and infrastructure.
The visit began with a presentation from the DC Product Team and a guided tour of the facility. This provided valuable exposure to the role of data centres in supporting digital services and critical infrastructure.
More than just a site visit, the session offered a meaningful learning experience for our team to better understand real-world operations and industry practices.

TM R&D Secures Double Wins at Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards 2026
Recognised for advancing AI-driven network assurance and automation in telecommunications
CYBERJAYA, 7 April 2026 – Telekom Research & Development Sdn Bhd (TM R&D), the innovation arm of TM Group and a subsidiary of Multimedia University (MMU), has won the Network and Broadband – Telecommunications and Automation – Telecommunications categories at the Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards 2026. The recognition celebrates the development of two platforms, ANTRIX and SMART-E which enhance network assurance and automate large-scale infrastructure migrations across Telekom Malaysia Berhad’s (TM) nationwide network.
Developed by TM R&D in collaboration with Group Network Technology of TM, both platforms address long-standing operational challenges in network assurance and infrastructure upgrades while improving efficiency, visibility and service continuity across TM’s broadband ecosystem.
The Advanced Neural Telecommunication Resolution Interface and Exchange (ANTRIX) is a smart network operations platform deployed across TM’s nationwide network in December 2025. It monitors network alerts, performance data and service indicators to detect issues in real time. Unlike traditional systems that relied on manual reporting and reactive processes, ANTRIX automates monitoring and response, enable faster generation of trouble tickets, restoration plans, work permits and change requests.
ANTRIX has also replaced TM’s legacy system and provides intelligent analysis tools that help identify root causes and coordinate solutions more efficiently across the network.
System for Migration & Technology Refresh of Network Element Tool (SMART-E) was developed to streamline Optical Line Terminal (OLT) migration activities during network upgrades and technology refresh programmes. Previously, migration processes involved manual configurations and extended timelines that affected inventory synchronisation and service continuity.
The platform automates the entire migration process, making it easier for systems and teams to work together. It also connects with TM’s inventory to handle key tasks automatically, such as setting up services, managing changes and carrying out checks before and after migration.
Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, Chief Executive Officer of TM R&D, said the recognition reflects the organisation’s continued commitment to research driven innovation that delivers real value to the business and to our customers.

TM recently received recognition as a 3-Star Lister on the UN Global Compact Network Malaysia & Brunei ESG Select List. TM R&D contributed to this achievement through the Smart Urban Forestry project, developed in collaboration with Credence and supported by a purposeful partnership with the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM). The project received a Gold Star under the Purposeful Partnership category, recognising the responsible application of AI in support of climate and biodiversity action.
This achievement reflects how research excellence, cross-disciplinary collaboration and sustainability can come together to deliver real-world impact.

As part of our Big Idea Lecture Series, we were honoured to host Prof. Dr. Ir. @ZainalAripinZakariah, former GM of Research at TM R&D, who shared the story of how he helped transform Telekom R&D from the ground up.
In 1993, the unit was small, the resources limited and the path uncertain. But instead of waiting for perfect conditions, he made the decision to move forward, to jump-start research efforts by building partnerships, activating talent and driving progress one step at a time.
His talk reminded us that progress starts with action. That being resourceful, bold and connected to purpose can spark growth even in challenging times.
As we move forward, we carry this mindset with us. Because to shape the future, we must be willing to start, even when the way isn’t clear yet.

It was an opportunity for our researchers to connect directly with the business, gain a deeper understanding of real-world challenges and witness how our solutions are already making a meaningful impact.

TM R&D was honoured to showcase our in-house metaverse education solution to YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the recent Temu Anwar @ MMU Programme and the launch of the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence & Engineering (FAIE).
The solution demonstrates how education can move beyond traditional boundaries into an immersive 3D environment. This enables students and communities to learn, collaborate, and create in new and impactful ways. More than a technology showcase, it reflects TM R&D’s commitment to reimagining education by nurturing talent, unlocking creativity, uplifting learning experiences and enabling access for everyone, everywhere.
We thank YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, Chief Secretary to the Government for visiting our booth and showing interest in our metaverse education solution showcase.

Driving Malaysia’s Digital Future with Metaverse Learning

TM R&D recently joined 𝗖𝗗𝗢 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗩𝗘𝗫 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱, the Public Sector Chief Digital Officers Conference, which brought together over 500 digital leaders from ministries and agencies. Themed “Agile and Intelligent Digital Leaders of a New Era,” the event focused on shaping the next phase of Malaysia’s digital transformation.
Together with Credence, we showcased two of our public sector-focused solutions: 
🔹 eHEALTH Digital Screening – supports early detection and proactive health monitoring 
🔹 Smart Urban Forestry Platform – uses AI to help manage and protect urban green spaces
We also had the opportunity to demo our eHEALTH solution to YBhg. Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, Chief Secretary to the Government.

Speed, Scale, Stability: The Three Pillars of Performance Testing

Recognised for transforming forestry assessments with AI for biodiversity conservation in Malaysia



Cyberjaya, 25 March 2025 – Telekom Research & Development Sdn Bhd (TM R&D), a subsidiary of MMU, has clinched the prestigious AI – Environmental Services category at the Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards 2025. This recognition celebrates TM R&D’s breakthrough in Smart Forestry AI Tools Enhancement, which is revolutionising forestry assessments and advancing biodiversity conservation in Malaysia.



The award-winning innovation leverages AI to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of forestry assessments, a crucial step in conserving Malaysia’s rich biodiversity. Developed in collaboration with the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM), the solution addresses key challenges in tree data collection, particularly the measurement of diameter at breast height (DBH), which is vital for calculating forest growing stock, basal area, biomass, and carbon stock.



Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, Chief Executive Officer of TM R&D, expressed her appreciation for the achievement: “At TM R&D, we are committed to harnessing AI to create real-world impact. This award reaffirms our dedication to driving innovation that not only enhances efficiency and safety in forestry assessments but also supports sustainability and biodiversity conservation. By leveraging AI, we are empowering conservation efforts and contributing to Malaysia’s climate action goals.”



The AI-powered solution, launched in 2024, utilises a mobile app that captures tree images and automatically calculates DBH without the need for additional equipment or reference objects. This innovation significantly reduces the time taken for data collection from two minutes per tree to just 20 seconds, with an impressive 96% accuracy rate in tree segmentation and an error margin of only 1.2 cm for branched and leaning trees.



Dr. Sharlene further acknowledged the crucial role of FRIM in this achievement: “We extend our gratitude to our research partners at FRIM for their invaluable expertise in forestry and biodiversity management. Their collaboration has been instrumental in ensuring our AI-driven solution delivers meaningful impact for conservation efforts.”



Traditionally, forestry assessments require ground-level measurements, which are time-consuming and pose safety risks, especially when working at heights. With TM R&D’s AI solution, the process is not only faster but also safer, enabling quicker reporting of carbon stock inventories and supporting informed decision-making for forest protection.



This innovation aligns with Malaysia’s commitment to combating climate change and preserving biodiversity. By streamlining data collection and enhancing accuracy, TM R&D’s solution is set to become a game-changer in sustainable forestry management.

New team members from TM R&D recently had the opportunity to visit TM’s Network Intelligence Centre (NIC), gaining first-hand exposure to cutting-edge network operations. TM R&D Showcases Innovation for a Smarter, Safer Future at KPKT’s Innovation Day 2024

Telekom Research & Development Sdn Bhd (TM R&D), the innovation arm of TM Group and a subsidiary of MMU, bagged the Digital Transformation of the Year Award (Private Sector/NGO) at the WITSA Global Innovation and Tech Excellence Awards 2024 for its innovative solution namely Mobile Intelligent Network Diagnostic System (MINDS). Held in Yerevan, Armenia, this prestigious accolade was awarded in recognition of the company’s success in developing an innovative solution that is able to seamlessly integrate disparate systems employing legacy technology.



MINDS is a homegrown solution that helps mobile service providers manage customer complaints more efficiently by correlating all the information about a customer’s network usage and experience into a single, centralised platform. This provides a complete picture of the service and enables providers to address issues accurately, often before the customer is even aware of them. By fixing problems based on real-time network data, MINDS reduces the number of complaints and speeds up problem resolution.



The solution also delivers valuable insights that help companies make more informed decisions about improving their mobile networks. Safeguarding the Future of Work: TM R&D Showcases Smart Helmet and E-PTW

The topic of environmental sustainability has always been close to our hearts. At the recent ‘Digital Technology for Climate Governance’ event, hosted by Multimedia University in conjunction with the National Climate Governance Summit 2024, we were truly inspired. TM R&D CEO, Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, was invited to participate in a panel discussion on ‘Harnessing Digital Technology for Climate Action.’ The session provided valuable insights into the intersection of digital technology and climate governance as well as exploring practical applications and future directions for leveraging innovation to drive sustainable environmental practices. During the session, Dr. Sharlene outlined three key pillars of climate governance: 𝗠𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, which focuses on managing the immediate risks of climate change; 𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, aimed at building resilience within the economy and ensuring self-sufficiency knowing that the climate risk is coming; and 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, which emphasises adopting solutions in a way that does not negatively impact businesses or the economy. Dr. Sharlene also highlighted the critical role of digital technology in advancing these pillars, using TM R&D’s Smart Water Integrated Management System (SWIMS) as an example. SWIMS is a homegrown solution that provides real-time monitoring and data analysis of water resources, helps manage water consumption, detects water leakages and optimises water distribution. TM R&D receives certification from MOSTI for Innovative Tech Solutions

TM R&D hosted two exciting events with distinct objectives this week!. First, we conducted a comprehensive three-day workshop with 𝐽𝑎𝑏𝑎𝑡𝑎𝑛 𝐼𝑚𝑖𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑒𝑛 𝑀𝑎𝑙𝑎𝑦𝑠𝑖𝑎 (JIM), sharing our journey in R&D and innovation. This workshop marked a significant milestone for JIM as they took steps toward establishing their own R&D and Innovation Unit. TM R&D & MMU establish strategic partnership with Omantel

Transformative technologies are revolutionising our everyday lives. More and more global companies are slowly but surely gravitating their way for collaboration and building hubs as the Malaysian government continues accelerating investments into the AI infrastructure. In line with this, we hosted our flagship event, the TM R&D Tech Mocktail, with the theme “Transformative opportunities with AI everywhere.” This fifth cycle of the series, where brilliant minds met, featured discussions on various AI topics including finding the balance between adopting technology to achieve efficiency, productivity, and exponential growth. The event was led by Dato’ Zainal Abidin Putih, Chairman of TM, and Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazliham Mohd Su’ud, President & Chief Executive Officer of MMU / Chairman of TM R&D. We were also honoured to welcome Dato’ Sri Idris Jala, Chairman of PEMANDU Associates, who captivated the audience with an insightful keynote on transformative leadership in a digital world. His address highlighted that to drive the AI ecosystem in Malaysia, leaders should focus on pursuing “the Game of Impossible” by setting ambitious goals that challenge the status quo. He also encouraged collaboration by fostering partnerships between the government, industry, and academia to share knowledge and resources. Last but not least, he emphasised enforcing a discipline of action, so that plans are followed through with clear milestones. Following this, we had an engaging panel session entitled “AI for Good: Unlocking Leadership Perspectives for Exponential Growth.” Moderated by <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/ACoAAAR09S8B0QZhFF25AY12J6VdSpxPw4CxBEE"></a>Freda Liu, the panel debated three broad areas: policies, talent, and sustainable growth. TM R&D Tech Mocktail 2024

TM R&D welcomes YBhg. Dato’ Ts. Dr. Hj. Aminuddin Hashim, Secretary General of the Ministry of Science, Technology & Innovation (MOSTI) and delegates to our office here in Cyberjaya. During the visit, our CEO, Dr. Sharlene briefed on TM R&D and we showcased our labs, along with various innovative solutions. These include the Smart Forest Dashboard, designed to facilitate seamless tracking and monitoring of diverse forest activities. Next, we presented our Intelligent Connectivity Solutions, namely FIRA and SIERA which provide fast connectivity solutions in rural, suburban, and infra-blind spots. YBhg. Dato was impressed with FIRA and expressed his keen interest. Additionally, we introduced the SCARLET solution for off-grid power issues and backup power alternatives. Thank you to YBhg. TM R&D Showcases Cutting-Edge Innovations to MOSTI Secretary General During Cyberjaya Visit

The latest stocktake of global corporate net-zero objectives reveals a concerning trend – while over one-third of the world’s largest publicly traded companies have committed to some form of net-zero target, a staggering 65% are failing to meet even the most basic reporting protocols.
This glaring gap between intention and action poses a significant threat to our collective goal of achieving a climate-safe future. Bridging this gap demands a step away from the status quo of “business as usual” thinking, which drives the twin crises of climate change and biodiversity loss that we currently face.
Recently, Professor Donald Lessard from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) popped over to TM R&D to give an open and fresh take on what he terms as “critical sustainability imperatives”. We delved deep into the urgent need for radical changes in business models, technology and policy, recognising that addressing these challenges demands a multifaceted approach from corporate players to government law makers.
In our pursuit of decarbonisation, we must ensure that our transformational efforts strike a balance between corporate profitability and sustainability goals. Our transformation plans should demonstrate how we’ve weighed factors such as local environmental impact, risk and reward analysis, and government policies to incentivise and support our initiatives.

Dr. Sharlene was invited as a panelist for the Core Leadership (ENERGY LEADER) Forum with the title 𝑀𝑒𝑚𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑘𝑎𝑠𝑎 𝑊𝑎𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑎 𝐷𝑎𝑙𝑎𝑚 𝑆𝑒𝑘𝑡𝑜𝑟 𝑇𝑒𝑛𝑎𝑔𝑎 – 𝑀𝑒𝑛𝑢𝑗𝑢 𝐾𝑒 𝐴𝑟𝑎ℎ 𝑀𝑎𝑠𝑎 𝐷𝑒𝑝𝑎𝑛 𝑌𝑎𝑛𝑔 𝑀𝑎𝑚𝑝𝑎𝑛.
The panel session brought together some of the brightest minds namely Dr Amani Salim, an Inventor, Engineer-Scientist and nanoSkunkWorkX CTO & Co-Founder and Ms Lee Pui Yong, Chief Sustainability Officer of TNB to discuss on women empowerment towards a sustainable future.
In the session, Dr. Sharlene reflected on her career journey, highlighting significant moments from her early days to her current role as CEO of TM R&D. She shared that transitioning from R&D to corporate was a challenging moment, but with the guidance of a great mentor, she successfully navigated and overcame the obstacles shaping her into who she is today. In addition, Dr. Sharlene shared insights on how women leaders can foster collaborative partnerships by effectively communicating and connecting with others.

TM R&D Showcases Cutting-Edge Solutions at TM One’s 5G Labs Event

In conjunction with the ‘Majlis Amanat Tahun Baharu 2024’ with YB Tuan Chang Lih Kang, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), TM R&D was invited to participate in its showcase. Held at the ‘Dewan Tun Canselor’ MMU Cyberjaya, TM R&D had the opportunity to present two of our innovative solutions to YB Tuan Chang Lih Kang – our smart forestry dashboard to facilitate seamless tracking and monitoring of various forest activities as well as the data-driven smart helmet to ensure workforce’s ultimate safety.



Some of the ‘Majlis Amanat Tahun Baharu 2024’ highlights include – MOSTI will focus on several priority areas namely Hydrogen, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Biotechnology – Food Security & Precision Medicine, Startups Ecosystem and Space Technology. On AI, MOSTI will continue to lead efforts to make AI more accessible by ensuring the development of ethical technology through AI Ethics Guidelines that will be launched in the first quarter of this year.

Imagine this, in 2023, some countries experienced the hottest ever temperatures in history. This has been a huge wake-up call to many to start putting in efforts to combat climate change before there is nothing left to fight for. Here at TM R&D, we were fortunate to have Prof. John E. Fernández from the renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) shed some light on how climate change has turned the world on its axis and also, answered the possibilities of whether we can achieve this race by 2050. The short answer to that is yes, thankfully, we are a sticky species and won’t go extinct. But, as he says, there is an enormous increase in greenhouse gas emissions particularly from emerging economies catching up on development. Yes, more efforts must be made from these markets but also much is expected from wealthy countries to weigh in and shoulder greater responsibilities. Prof Fernández explained what are the tipping points we should be aware of, and how research and development can play a pivotal role in combatting different factors in this critical journey. Areas like AI, energy, materials and technology fall under a broad spectrum but have vast potential to be the answer for many of our global climate problems today. TM R&D recently participated in the Digital HR Tech Day event supporting TM One. TM R&D showcases AISHA and PEOPLE at Digital HR Tech Day Event

We’re thrilled to share that TM R&D has signed a Letter of Collaboration with Jabatan Perhutanan Negeri Selangor (JPNS) to embark on a transformative journey towards environmental conservation. The collaboration focuses on the study, analysis, and mitigation of challenges related to forest conservation and rehabilitation for CFS-Selangor.



The LoC was signed after the inaugural Selangor Royal Heritage Forest Declaration Ceremony officiated by His Royal Highness, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah ibni Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, Sultan of Selangor.



In addition, TM R&D participated in the exhibition where we showcased our Smart Integrated Dashboard. The dashboard represents a groundbreaking leap in biodiversity management, capable of integrating various data from key departments under the State of Selangor and the Ministry of Natural Resource, Environment, and Climate Change. We also showcase our varied solutions namely the connected vehicle system, fixed wireless access connectivity and data-driven helmet for workforce safety.

Held at the Berjaya Times Square Hotel Kuala Lumpur, the event was graced by the presence of esteemed guests:

TM R&D Tech Mocktails 2023

TM R&D welcomed Mr. Fabian Bigar, CEO of MyDIGITAL Corporation to our office here in Cyberjaya.



During the courtesy visit, we had the opportunity to present our range of IOT solutions that help businesses and organisations improve process efficiencies and manpower productivity. Some of the key areas that lent to a robust conversation were smart water integrated management system to monitor non-revenue water leakages, optimise repair and replacement of ageing infra; connected vehicle solution that enables fleet and driver productivity as well as ensures vehicle safety and compliance level; workforce management that digitises the workforce by streamlining task distribution and connecting all stakeholders seamlessly on one platform.



We gained insights from Mr. Bigar’s presentation that explained the government’s comprehensive 10-year digitalisation plan especially in addressing MyDIGITAL’s role in setting up initiatives for businesses to expand and thrive locally, regionally and globally. We also talked about the establishment of the Malaysia Centre for the 4IR (Malaysia Centre4IR) that promotes private-public partnership in the areas of energy transition and digital transformation.

MyDIGITAL CEO Visits TM R&D

TM R&D recently participated in a panel session at the World Digital Economy and Technology Summit (WDET) 2023 organised by the <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/company/ksinstitute/">KSI Strategic Institute for Asia Pacific</a>. Titled “The impact of digitalisation on ESG and how digital technology can support sustainability”, the panel of speakers included our CEO Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, Ms. Barbara Meynert, Mr. Shazali Sulaiman, Ms. Arina Kok, Mr. Girish Mavath, Mr. Murugason R. Thangaratnam and Ms. Shikha Kedia Bharadwaj.



Moderated by Adj. Practice Professor Cheah Kok Hoong, Dr Sharlene shared her insights on the role TM R&D plays in shaping digital sustainability. At TM R&D, all our solutions are built primarily to improve efficiency and productivity – basically, reduce waste and improve the effective use of manpower and assets. The smart utilities solution for example, monitors non-revenue water leakages while the workforce management streamlines task distribution and connects all stakeholders seamlessly on one platform.



The topic that resonated with the audience was how TM R&D is supporting the Central Forest Spine (CFS) program, a national-level initiative in collaboration with Jabatan Perhutanan Negeri Selangor (JPNS).  The forests are disconnected due to uncontrolled development, logging, agricultural expansion, deforestation, and overharvesting. Thus, the purpose of CFS is to ‘connect’ all these disconnected forests by building a safe forest corridor, thereby enhancing the connectivity of these diverse jungle ecosystems. Digital technology can play an impactful role in problem-solving some of the key obstacles the agencies face on the ground.



At TM R&D, we believe it is imperative that corporate Malaysia invests in R&D as a catalyst for business growth and profitability as well as contribute to the nation’s high economy ambitions. TM R&D CEO @ World Digital Economy & Technology Summit 2023

Cyberview Sdn Bhd recently organised the biggest design challenge in Cyberjaya to help improve the community’s quality of life by making the city more efficient, responsive, sustainable, resilient, healthy, and enjoyable to live in while also enhancing urban social living.



Held in RekaScape, Cyberjaya, InnoJam is a two-day Design Challenge where participants come together in dynamic teams to tackle real-world problems and develop innovative solutions. The challenge provides a platform for participants from all walks of life to brainstorm and design innovative ideas and solutions with the help of seasoned mentors.



TM R&D supported the program by providing its in-house open software development platform named Open Innovation Platform (OIP) for participants to leverage the services and data available through our marketplace using REST Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). TM R&D team also provided mentoring to the participants in terms of utilising OIP and its data for their innovations.



OIP developed by TM R&D, is the 1st Open Software Development Platform in Malaysia. This platform serves as a multi-layer digital infra that provides a complete ecosystem for the creation of new revenue opportunities and is also part of TM One Sandbox Ecosystem. In addition, OIP comprises a data brokerage system, an Application Programming Interface (API) aggregation infrastructure and an end-to-end Internet of Things (IoT) platform for rapid service creation.

TM R&D Supports Cyberview’s InnoJam Design Challenge with OIP

Our CEO, Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah was invited as a guest speaker for the Fireside Chat Session with YB Teo Nie Ching, Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital to discuss the topic of Women Impact in Tech: Trend or Demand.



Joined by other leaders namely Jun Maria Tan Abdullah, Senior Director of Human Capital, PayNet; Izzana Salleh, Co-Founder & Global President of Project Girls 4 Girls and Ivy Kwan, Vice President & Key Account Manager of Ericsson, the Fireside Chat Session was uniquely held while on a journey from Kuala Lumpur to Tanjung Malim via a KTMB chartered train.



Dr. Sharlene shared her invaluable insights and conveyed that yes, women’s impact in tech is significant and a growing demand in the industry but diversity and inclusiveness are also important. Having a balanced gender representation in the tech industry not only promotes equality but also enhances decision-making, fuels innovation, and improves problem-solving.



In TM R&D, 50% of the workforce are women, who also make up some of the key engineers and data scientists.

TM R&D CEO in Fireside Chat Session with YB Teo Nie Ching

In line with our environmental sustainability agenda, TM R&D has collaborated with Jabatan Perhutanan Negeri Selangor (JPNS), which oversees the potential implementation of the Central Forest Spine (CFS) Programme. The CFS Programme is a strategic and comprehensive initiative aimed at conserving and managing the country’s forest ecosystems.



In addition, TM R&D was appointed as the technology partner of the CFS-Selangor Task Force and a workshop was recently held at our office to develop an integrated dashboard for CFS-Selangor agencies. The integrated data collected through this dashboard will facilitate seamless tracking and monitoring of various activities namely wildlife and initiatives status. It also enables the study and analysis of forest conservation as well as rehabilitation within the CFS-Selangor area.



We also had the opportunity to showcase our varied solutions such as connected vehicle system, workforce management, data-driven helmet for workforce safety, smart water integrated management system, fixed wireless access connectivity, and a signal enhancer for remote areas. All aimed at driving smart forest and environment management as well as wildlife monitoring.

TM R&D Tech Mocktails

Telekom Research & Development Sdn Bhd (TM R&D), the innovation arm of Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) wins the “Digital-Utilities” Award for its smart workforce management solution known as FORCE at the recent Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards 2023 (MTEA), organised by the Asian Business Review.



This is the seventh award received by TM R&D from MTEA in the last five years, spotlighting its role in accelerating the use of advanced technology and mobile-first approach to spearhead industrial productivity and operational efficiencies as Malaysia transitions into a digital economy. TM Bags Top Tech Award for its Digital Workforce Solution

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Collaboration for joint research in the areas of Next Generation Passive Optical Networks to enhance bandwidth experience for users in Malaysia</li><li>TM R&D and ZTE have successfully proved an ultra-wide transmission rate of 50GPON technology.</li></ul>



 Telekom Research & Development Sdn Bhd (TM R&D), the innovation arm of Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ZTE (Malaysia) Corporation Sdn Bhd (ZTE), a global leading provider of information and communication technology solutions, to collaborate on optical network research, bringing the first 50Gbps bandwidth experience to Malaysia.



The MoU was signed by Dr Sharlene Thiagarajah, Chief Executive Officer, TM R&D and Steven Ge, Chief Executive Officer, ZTE Malaysia. Under this agreement, TM R&D and ZTE will jointly explore the capabilities of next-generation. Passive Optical Network (PON) access technology, 50GPON, to support various application scenarios. In addition, both entities will look into use cases that can deliver ultra-broadband access to the government, enterprise and consumers, as well as support the requirements of innovative services such as 5G, Cloud Virtual Reality (VR), industrial intelligent manufacturing for high bandwidth, low latency & jitter, and clock synchronisation, all of which will enhance the user experience in Malaysia.



Commenting on the MoU, Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, Chief Executive Officer, TM R&D said, “TM R&D is committed to conducting research on future technologies and innovating new value-added smarter eco-systems that will improve the quality of user experience, and ultimately bring a positive impact on their lives. His Excellency Ambassador of Palestine and His Excellency Ambassador of Algeria Visits TM R&D

Telekom Research & Development Sdn Bhd (TM R&D), the innovation arm of Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), recently won the Innovative Tech Companies of the Year Award at the Asia Corporate Excellence and Sustainability Awards (ACES) 2022, organised by MORS Group. TM R&D recently participated at The Smart Nation Expo 2022, Malaysia’s biggest tech event on Smart Cities, Emerging Technologies and Applications. With the theme “ACCELERATING THE DIGITAL TRANFORMATION” the landmark event signals Malaysia’s next economic leap into the next digital age that will transform the Nation. Officiated by YB Dato Sri Mustapa bin Mohamed, Minister at the Prime Minister’s Department (Economy), the three-day event hosted more than 500 exhibitors from 23 different countries, showcasing more than 1000 latest innovations.

The panel session also featured two other renowned speakers and they are YBhg. Prof. Datuk Dr. Asma Ismail FASc. Holder of Kursi Ibnu Sinar, International Islamic University, Malaysia and Dr. Chai Lay Ching, Chair, Young Scientists Network-Academy of Sciences Malaysia.
The one-hour session aims to address issues in empowering women in the higher education sector to adapt to the clash of the disruptive era and the Covid-19 pandemic thus drive the role in achieving sustainable development goals.
Dr. Sharlene shared excellent views on the current landscape of women’s leadership in the industry and its trend as well as her opinion on work and home life balance in today’s context.

TM R&D was honoured to recently have En. Nizam Abd Razak one of its board members, visiting the innovation centre. The visit was organised to share on TM R&D’s role in supporting TM’s value stream and to showcase some of TM R&D’s innovative solutions.
En. Nizam who is also the Co-Founder and Managing Director of Animonsta Studios best known for animated series BoBoiBoy, was warmly welcomed by Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah together with TM R&D’s Management Team. The visit started off with a presentation on TM R&D followed by a product showcase. TM R&D CEO in ‘Notepad with Ibrahim Sani’ on Astro Awani

TM R&D assists Orbix International School in adhering to the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) with deployment of EWAR towards curbing the spread of COVID-19 virus.



Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), through its innovation arm, TM Research & Development (TM R&D), further promotes the adoption of digital solutions in the education sector by deploying its Early Warning, Alert & Response or “EWAR” at Orbix International School (Orbix), a private school in Muar, Johor. EWAR is an Artificial Intelligence (A.I) driven contactless temperature screening solution internally-developed by TM R&D.



In an effort to digitalise the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) outlined for schools, Orbix has installed EWAR Compact, one (1) of EWAR’s product categories, within their premise to better facilitate the temperature screenings of their students, teachers and visitors towards curbing the spread of COVID-19 virus.



Commenting on the initiative, Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, Chief Executive Officer, TM R&D said, “We are honoured to be working with an educational institution such as Orbix to deploy our cost-effective and innovative solution in response to the required safety protocols. This illustrates the flexibility and readiness of education vertical in adapting to the new normal. At TM R&D, we are ever ready to assist businesses and organisations to get back on their feet safely.”



“We truly believe that deploying the EWAR Compact at schools or any educational institutions can provide students and teachers with a near-normal return to school experience as possible. We hope that this effort can encourage other schools and educational institutions to install EWAR Compact and simplify the adoption of the new SOPs in our battle against COVID-19.”



EWAR Compact is an AI-driven, one-on-one contactless thermal screening solution with a high accuracy of +/- 0.3℃, fast (~1sec) detection and voice prompt. In addition, AI-based facial recognition capabilities can also be applied with the solution. With EWAR Compact, students and teachers can go to schools with peace of mind, knowing that their schools are using the most effective technology available to safeguard their health.



“Besides that, we are delighted to see more schools adopting digital solutions as this will expose teachers and students on how technology can help improve lives through safety. The exposure to EWAR Compact will also help students to experience digitalisation in action first-hand, and witness the benefits of digital adoption even before they enter the workforce. We hope this will help groom an industry-forward talent pool which will subsequently drive the nation’s digital aspiration, befitting TM Group’s role of the enabler of Digital Malaysia,” she added.



“Deploying EWAR Compact was a vital step for us as we were looking for the most effective technology available in safeguarding the health of our students and teachers. So far, we have received positive feedback on how EWAR Compact has enhanced the efficiency of temperature taking while simultaneously improving social distancing,” said Govindan Nair, Chief Marketing Officer of Orbix Education.



“The students especially have shared that they like how interactive the solution is. As we are firmly committed to ensuring the health and safety of our students, it is also important for us to expose our students to how innovation results in real-world solutions,” he added.



Back in July, TM R&D has successfully installed EWAR Compact at 12 selected schools under the purview of Bangsar / Pudu District Education Office (PPDBP) namely Victoria Institution, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Dato’ Lokman, SMK Seri Saujana, SMK Desa Petaling, SMK Cochrane, SMK Taman Maluri, SMK Alam Damai, SMK Bukit Jalil, SMK Dato’ Onn, SMK (P) Bandaraya, SMK Convent Jalan Peel and SMK Seri Permaisuri.



During the early stages of the Movement Control Order (MCO), TM R&D has introduced two (2) main product categories under EWAR, namely EWAR Crowd and EWAR Compact as part of its contribution in the fight against COVID-19. The solution comes with four (4) main capabilities that close the critical loop from detection to containment. It is non-intrusive and has use-cases for both crowd and one-on-one scanning, respectively.



EWAR Crowd comes with a dual-camera (thermal and optical) and is designed to conduct a rapid body temperature screening of approximately 10-15 individuals per second simultaneously at high traffic areas. It can easily be deployed in locations with mass traffic flow such as offices, shopping complexes, transportation hubs, universities, schools, tourist attractions, airports, immigration centres, and hospitals. EWAR Compact on the other hand is more suitable for a one-on-one contactless thermal screening. This can eliminate the need of the hand-held temperature taking, which can subsequently improve social distancing and minimise long queues.



Both EWAR models have been installed at more than 150 sites across several industry verticals and have gone regional to help keep businesses safe beyond Malaysian shores. The solutions have been installed at the quarantine and treatment centre for COVID-19 cases at Malaysia Agro Exposition Park (MAEPS) in Serdang, large and mid-size office lobbies, hotels, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) payment counters, various sales galleries and Gamuda Land construction sites, just to name a few.



TM R&D has been growing from strength to strength since 2016, winning seven (7) globally recognised awards over the last two (2) years. Our innovations cut across multiple verticals such as the Smart Retail Analytics and Smart Safety Helmet, all developed internally by local talents in TM R&D. How Innovation is building a Digital Nation of Producers (PART 1 of 2)

TM R&D played a part in MYHackathon 2020 by providing its in-house open software development platform named Open Innovation Platform (OIP) to the participants.



MYHackathon 2020 is a nationwide event organised under the National Economic Regeneration Plan (PENJANA) to co-create digital solutions that will help improve the delivery of key public services.



Participants are able to leverage on OIP, Malaysia’s first open software development platform as a Service Exchange Platform to consume and publish their services or data through Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), Data Hosting Platform to host the services on OIP and Service Creation Platform to create smart services by connecting devices.



Shariq Haseeb, Head of Innovation and Portfolio Management, TM R&D delivered a keynote address to explain on OIP, its features and benefits in developing digital solutions.



MYHackathon 2020 will be held over six rounds at different locations across Malaysia each with a specific theme and matching set of problem statements for maximum value.

Why Open Data is essential to transform Malaysia into a dynamic Digital Nation (Part 2 of 2)

Kuala Lumpur: Permintaan untuk kelajuan internet yang lebih tinggi, peningkatan Kualiti Pengalaman (QoE) dan sasaran nasional untuk kadar penembusan jalur lebar membuka peluang baharu teknologi jalur lebar tanpa wayar untuk mengisi jurang yang ada.



Telekom Research & Development Sdn Bhd (TM R&D), cabang inovasi TM berada pada landasan kukuh menyediakan penggunaan jalur lebar berkelajuan tiga hingga lima kali lebih tinggi menerusi penyelesaian inovatif, Fast Internet for Rural Area (FIRA).



Ketua Pegawai Eksekutifnya, Dr Sharlene Thiagarajah berkata, sejajar Pelan Fiberisasi & Kesambungan Nasional (NFCP), pelanggan pra-Unifi dan bakal pelanggan yang berada dalam jarak atau lebih dari lima kilometer (km) dari stesen pangkalan 4G terdekat boleh menikmati jalur lebar tanpa wayar berkelajuan tinggi dengan menggunakan FIRA.



Katanya, FIRA adalah penyelesaian inovatif oleh TM R&D dalam menyediakan penggunaan jalur lebar berkelajuan tinggi yang menjimatkan bagi pengguna yang berada di kawasan luar bandar dan pinggir bandar yang tidak menerima capaian oleh Unifi atau fiber.
